Introduction

가야산국립공원은 1966년 6월 24일 사적 및 명승지로 지정되었으며, 1972년 10월 13일 국립공원으로 지정되었다. 가야산국립공원은 전체면적 76.256㎢로 경상남도와 경상북도가 서로 잇대어 있는 곳에 있으며 우뚝 솟은 상왕봉은 일명 우두산으로도 불리며, 그 위용을 자랑하고 있다. 이곳은 예로부터 해동의 10승지 또는 조선 팔경의 하나로 이름나 있는 곳이기도 하며, 우리나라 화엄종의 근본 도량으로 팔만대장경을 봉안한 법보종찰 해인사가 있는 곳이기도 하다.
