Haeinsa is one of the three major temples in Korea, founded in the 3rd year of King Aejang of Silla by monks Sun-eung and Lee Jeong, and is also famous as a Beopbojongchal (Dharma treasure temple) named after the Haeinsammae of the Avatamsaka Sutra. King Taejo of Goryeo made this temple a national temple of Goryeo and granted it 500 gyeol of land in gratitude for Heerang, who stayed at this temple and helped repel Gyeonhwon of Later Baekje. Haeinsa is a Beopbojongchal and one of the ten Avatamsaka temples. The name 'Haein' originates from the 'Haeinsammae' of the Avatamsaka Sutra, and Haeinsa was established as a spiritual center to propagate Avatamsaka thought. Haeinsa is called a Beopbo temple, one of Korea's Sambo temples, because it houses the Beopbo of the Goryeo Tripitaka in the Daejanggeungpanjeon (Tripitaka Hall). Haeinsa has many halls including Daejanggeungpanjeon, Daejeokgwangjeon, Myeongbujeon, Dokseonggak, and Eungjinjeon. Its subsidiary hermitages include Wondangam, Hongjeam, Yongtapseonwon, Gounam, Ganweolam, and Cheongnyangsa.
Hwangmaesan, the last subpeak of the Taebaek Mountain Range (太白山脈), is known as the place where the patriotic monk Muhakdaesa practiced asceticism during the Goryeo Dynasty. The area, including nearby Hwangmaebong, is beautifully formed by rocky cliffs to the southeast and is often called a small Geumgangsan for its scenery. From the summit, the surrounding view resembles a blooming plum blossom, giving a mysterious feeling as if floating alone inside the flower, hence the name Hwangmaesan. In the name, Hwang (黃) means wealth, and Mae (梅) means nobility, symbolizing overall prosperity. It is also said that anyone who prays with sincere devotion will have one wish granted. Especially famous are the azaleas that bloom in brilliant scarlet, covering tens of thousands of pyeong on the plateau in May.
Hambyeokru was originally built in 1321 during the reign of King Chungsuk of Goryeo by Kim Yeongdon, the then Hapju Jijusa (Governor of Hapju), with the inscription written by An Jin. The pavilion has been rebuilt several times to reach its current form. Located at the foot of Daeyaseong Fortress, it was constructed to overlook Jeongyangho Lake of the Hwang River and has long been used as a place where many poets and scholars enjoyed nature and culture. Writings by Joseon-era literati such as Yi Hwang, Jo Sik, and Song Si-yeol are displayed on plaques inside the pavilion, while Song Si-yeol’s calligraphy of 'Hambyeokru' is engraved on the rock wall behind. The pavilion is a wooden structure with a hipped-and-gabled roof, measuring three kan wide and three kan deep, supported by five beams. It is famous for the design in which the eaves’ water flows into the Hwang River.
