Hoguksa Temple is located within Geomdansan Mountain in Hanam-si, situated along the Geomdansan hiking course. Geomdansan, east of Hanam City Hall, stands 657 meters tall and is famous as a representative mountain of Hanam-si. It is said to have been a sacred mountain where ceremonies were held to the heavens by the king during the Baekje Hanseong period as the ancestral mountain of Hanam Wirye Fortress. The temple buildings of Hoguksa consist of Jongmuso, Daeungjeon, and Cheonbuljeon. The Daeungjeon roof is tiled but not in the typical temple building form, and Cheonbuljeon is located directly opposite Daeungjeon. The Buddha statue at the entrance of Hoguksa is unique with closed eyes and a hand gesture slightly different from typical Buddha statues. The most notable feature of Hoguksa is the Beomjonggak (bell pavilion). Although the temple is compact and small, its large tiles and colorful dancheong painting give an imposing appearance. After touring the modest Hoguksa, it is also worthwhile to hike the trail behind Beomjonggak leading through the tall, straight larch groves of Geomdansan. The summit of Geomdansan is a wide-open clearing offering panoramic views in all directions, especially the view of Paldang Dam and Dumulmeori toward Yangpyeong is outstanding.
