Introduction

[A mountain where rocky ridges and silver grass harmonize] Hwangseoksan is an extraordinary rocky mountain rising in the southern part of Geochang. Among the four mountains extending from the Baekdudaegan ridge—Gibaek, Geumwon, Geomang, and Hwangseok—this peak stands at the far end and is clearly visible even from Deogyusan. In autumn, the vast silver grass fields along the ridge from Geomang to Hwangseok create a spectacular view. Between Geumwon and Gibaek mountains lies the famous Yongchu Valley. Nearby Geomang Mountain was where Jeong Sun-deok, a female guerrilla general during the Korean War, was active. Hwangseoksanseong Fortress is an important historic site symbolizing the loyalty and integrity of the people of Anui in Hamyang. During the Japanese invasions of 1597, those who resisted the Japanese until the fortress fell died, and the women threw themselves off the steep cliffs, leaving the northern rocky cliffs of Hwangseoksan stained red with blood to this day. In Anui, the eight ponds and eight pavilions of Hwarim-dong are well known. Notably, Nongwoljeong, Donghojeong, Geoyeonjeong, and Gunjajeong represent pavilion culture comparable to that of Jeolla Province.
