Introduction

Hongpo Seowon in Chilseo-myeon, Haman-gun was established in 1782 (the 6th year of King Jeongjo) to honor five members of the Chilwon Yun clan: Yun Hwan, Yun Jadang, Yun Ji, Yun Seokbo, and Yun Takyeon. It is a representative case of a seowon built in the founder's home region during the Joseon Dynasty and the leading clan seowon in the Chilwon area. Hongpo Seowon was abolished in 1868 (the 5th year of King Gojong) under the Daewon-gun's seowon abolition policy but was reconstructed in 1974. The original site of the seowon now has the Hongpo Seowon Memorial Stone, and the building in front of Sangpojae in Sugok, Gyaenae-ri was rebuilt in July 1980. The "Hongpo Seowon Rebuilding Ridgepole Inscription" was written by Jongyakjang Yun Honggeun. The seowon consists of the outer gate, lecture hall, inner gate, and the shrine called Hongposa. Hongposa is located to the right of the lecture hall, and in front of Hongposa stands the "Stele of the Deeds of the Five Masters of Hongposa." Next to Hongposa is a separate entrance with a plaque called "Gyunsimun," through which the clan hall Sangpojae was additionally built. Behind Sangpojae is the burial site of the Chilwon Yun clan founder Yun Siyoung and others. A memorial service is held annually on Sangjeongil in March.
