Dongbaek Park is a park created on Dongbaek Island located at the southern end of Haeundae Beach. It was designated as park land in September 1966 and was developed in earnest in the 1990s. It is a beautiful natural area thick with camellia and pine trees, connected to the mainland by a sandbar. In 2006, when the APEC event was held in Busan, Dongbaek Park was refurbished with landscaping restoration, installation of an observation deck, coastal maintenance, mountain plaza and circular road improvements, rest plazas, and parking lots, making it a popular tourist destination. In addition to walking paths, there are amenities such as a badminton court, benches, and restrooms. Major facilities include the Choi Chi-won historic site, Nurimaru APEC House, Haeundae stone carving, and a mermaid statue on the beach in front of the park related to the legend of Princess Hwangok who married a king of the Mugung country. The coastal walking path around Dongbaek Island is ideal for walking or exercise.
Located near the south end of Haeundae Beach, Dongbaekseom Island was designated as a park in September 1, 1966. The island is full of dongbaek and pine trees and is connected to the main land by a bridge. The island also has a popular walking trail as well as badminton court, benches and restrooms.
Dongbaek Island has been connected to the land through sedimentation over a long period, but it is still called Dongbaek Island, reminiscent of its ancient geography. Many poets and scholars, including Choi Chi-won, visited this place where the sea and forest harmonize to enjoy its scenic beauty and passed down their impressions through poetry. A walking trail surrounds Dongbaek Island, attracting continuous visitors. There are various humanistic traces from past to present, including Choi Chi-won's Haeundae inscriptions, statues, and poetry monuments, the mermaid statue from the Princess Hwangok legend, and Nurimaru APEC House. In addition, the views of Busan from Dongbaek Island are impressive, with the coastline of Mipo across, Dalmaji Hill, Gwangandaegyo Bridge spanning the sea and sky, and Oryukdo, a symbol of the Busan sea, all visible at once. As its name suggests, camellia flowers bloomed so thickly here that horses were once kicked by falling blossoms; even now, from winter to spring, flower buds form and bright red flowers fall whole, enhancing its charm.
Dongbaekseom Island (Island of Camellias) is an island located off one end of Busan's famous Haeundae Beach. Although the years of sedimentation have connected the island to the mainland, Dongbaekseom was originally an island and is still referred to as one.
Dongbaekseom Island is easy to navigate thanks to the walking path that is built around it. The island has several attractions, including the monument inscribed with a poem of scholar Choi Chi-won, the mermaid statue based on the legend of Princess Hwagok, and the Nurimaru APEC House. It also offers fantastic views of the Busan shoreline towards Mipo, Dalmaji Hill, Gwangangdaegyo Bridge, and Oryukdo Island. As the name suggests, camellias burst into bloom everywhere on the island from winter to spring.
