Ttangkkeut Tower is a triangular monument standing tall at the southernmost point of the Korean Peninsula at 34°17′38″N latitude. At 9 meters high, the Ttangkkeut Tower commemorates the southern tip of the peninsula and features an 18-meter-long skywalk extending toward the sea. Through the Ttangkkeut old tourist site regeneration project by Haenam-gun, the observatory in front of the tower was remodeled into a skywalk with portions of the floor made of glass, allowing visitors to experience the thrill of walking directly over the sea via transparent tempered glass. The Ttangkkeut Tower Skywalk was designed with the concept of Alpha and Omega symbols, which signify the beginning and end of the Korean Peninsula, themed as taking one step beyond Ttangkkeut. From the skywalk, toward the land side, visitors can see the Ttangkkeut Tower and photo zones, while the coast side offers a panoramic view of the beautiful Ttangkkeut Sea. Standing at the end of the skywalk, one can feel a sense of freedom as if floating above the sea through the unobstructed views of the ocean and sky. This spot is also famous for its sunsets. However, visitors should exercise caution when visiting the Ttangkkeut Tower Skywalk after dark as the surroundings become dim. The Ttangkkeut Tower Skywalk can be reached by descending about 500 meters down a deck path from the Ttangkkeut observatory located at Galdusan in Ttangkkeut Village. There is also a walking path connected directly from the monorail top station.
The edge of the Haenam is referred to as ttangkkeut, which literally means at the end of the land. Located on Galdusan Mountain, the Ttangkkeut Observatory provides a panoramic view spanning from Jindo Island to Wando Island. The first floor of the observatory features a photo booth, where visitors can take pictures with Haenam’s Mascot and Ttangkkeut Village in the background. The café on the first floor provides visitors an opportunity to rest. Even though the observatory is easily accessible by walk, it is recommended to take the monorail, which offers a beautiful view of the Ttangkkeut Village.
‘Ttangkkeut,’ where the sea and sky meet and begin, is the place where the Baekdudaegan mountain range extends southward and makes its final powerful gesture before stopping, marking both the start and end of Baekdudaegan. It is also the place where the energy (gi) of the Korean Peninsula is most concentrated, traditionally considered sacred as it opens the gate to the heavens, where many sages and artists perform holy rites. There is a legend in Ttangkkeut Village that making wishes toward the sky and sea grants those wishes and fosters hope. With this symbolism, Ttangkkeut attracts many tourists nationwide. It serves as the starting point of national pilgrimage routes and is an important hub and transit route for maritime culture.
Haenam Galdusan is called the land's end, the farthest point of the Korean Peninsula. At the summit of Galdusan Saja-bong is the Ttangkkeut Observatory. From the observatory, the panorama of the southwestern sea from Jindo to Wando unfolds. On clear days, Hallasan on Jeju Island can also be seen. On the first floor of the observatory, there is a photo booth where visitors can take pictures with Haenam's symbol and Ttangkkeut village as a backdrop, and a café operates. It is possible to walk up to the observatory, but taking the monorail is also a good way to leisurely enjoy the scenery of Ttangkkeut village.
Ttangkkeut Monorail is an electric vehicle that connects Ttangkkeut Village and the Ttangkkeut Observatory. Riding the monorail up to the observatory allows you to vividly enjoy the spectacular scenery of the southwestern coastline and the beauty of the deep blue sea. It is especially helpful for people with disabilities and the elderly. The monorail is 395 meters long, and it takes about 7 minutes to reach the observatory. It opened on December 19, 2005.
