Haenam Hyanggyo is estimated to have been established during the reign of King Chungnyeol of Goryeo. In the 7th year of Taejo (1398), the memorial tablets of Confucian scholars were enshrined and worshipped, and it was established for the education and moral guidance of local people. It was relocated to its current site in the 13th year of Seongjong (1482). It was renovated in the 4th year of Myeongjong (1549), burned down during the Japanese invasions of Imjin War, and rebuilt in the 2nd year of Gwanghaegun (1610). It has been renovated several more times since then. Haenam Hyanggyo is built on a sloped terrain with the layout of learning in front and worship in the back. Daeseongjeon (main shrine), Inner Gate, and Myeongnyundang (lecture hall) are arranged in a straight line. Around Daeseongjeon, which is enclosed by the Inner Gate and a wall, there are East and West dormitories, a two-story Myeongnyundang in the front, and one Gojiksa (dormitory for officials). Currently, Haenam Hyanggyo serves as a base for local Confucian scholars, holding the Seokjeon rite every spring and autumn, and offering educational programs for youth such as loyalty and filial piety classes, scholar experiences, and character education.

It is a Joseon Dynasty educational institution located next to Geumganggol Reservoir. It enshrines six distinguished figures from Haenam: Choi Bu, Im Eok-ryeong, Yoo Hee-chun, Yoon Gu, and Yoon Seon-do. It was abolished in 1868 and later, in 1922, Park Baek-eung was added, making a total of six enshrined figures. Haechon Seowon was originally built in 1652 as a shrine to Im Eok-ryeong, then in 1689, upon the initiative of the Haenam Confucian scholars, Choi Bu and Yoo Hee-chun were added, and in 1721 Yoon Gu and Yoon Seon-do were enshrined as well, becoming Ohhyeonsa. After liberation, it was rebuilt and relocated to its current site in 1991. The Haechon Seowon shrine, Haechonsa, is a gabled roof building with three bays at the front and one bay at the side. The lecture hall, displaying a plaque with the name Haechon Seowon, is a hip-and-gable roof structure with three bays at the front and two bays at the side.
