Introduction

[Everywhere you look, there are historic sites and relics] Rising south of Gyeongju, Namsan was an object of worship for the Silla people. It consists of about 40 valleys and ridges flowing from two peaks, Geumosan (468m) and Gowi Peak (494m), forming an elongated oval shape stretching 4 km east-west and 8 km north-south. It is an open-air museum scattered with over 100 temple sites, more than 80 stone Buddha statues, and around 60 stone pagodas. Namsan is divided into the southwestern mountain, the sacred birthplace of Silla, and the southeastern mountain, which includes numerous stone Buddhas in areas such as Mireukgol, Tapgol, and Bucheogol. The natural scenery is also remarkable, with many varied valleys and uniquely shaped rocks forming natural sculptures, accompanied by numerous hiking trails as frequented as the visitors themselves. For those familiar with Namsan, it is said, "One cannot say they have seen Gyeongju without climbing Namsan." Namsan is a place where natural beauty is combined with the long history of Silla, and where the aesthetic and religious consciousness of the Silla people has been elevated into art.
