Mudungam was founded in 1959 by Mr. Hong Sa-yuk, who lived here and built the hermitage, and from 1962 it was affiliated as a branch temple of Ssanggyesa. It is now renamed Bulamsa Temple, affiliated with the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism. The buildings have been gradually rebuilt, including the current Gwaneumjeon, Samsinjeon, Seokguljeon, bell pavilion, two dormitory buildings, and a recently built stone pagoda, making it a temple of considerable size. Located on a steep mountain, it is also a precarious temple. Bulamsa holds the Cultural Property of Jeollanam-do No. 211, the Wooden Seated Statue of Great Wisdom Bodhisattva, which is the first wooden bodhisattva statue discovered in Jeonnam and of high cultural value. The Bulamsan Temple Music Festival, which was temporarily suspended due to COVID-19, resumed in 2022. Bulamsa is famous as a temple with a panoramic view of the Seomjin River. The path to the temple is steep, but once at the summit, visitors can enjoy the beautiful scenery of the Seomjin River, along with the Baeksajang beach, Hadong-eum, and pine forest landscapes of Hadong in Gyeongsang-do. The best way to reach Bulamsa is by car, about 20 minutes from downtown Gwangyang.
