Muyang Seowon, whose name means 'Sunlight of Mujin,' the old name of Gwangju, is a seowon established during the reign of King Injong of Goryeo by the Tamjin Choi clan with nationwide Confucian scholars' support. It enshrines the spirit tablets of five figures: royal physician Choi Sa-jeon and his descendants Choi Bu, Choi Hee-chun, and Na Deok-hyeon. Centered on the lecture hall, Itaekdang, there are Hapui Gate and Hap-in Gate on the left and right. Passing Hapui Gate, on the right is Seongji-jae, the east dormitory, and on the left is Nakho-jae, the west dormitory. Beyond the inner gate, Sampo Gate, on elevated ground surrounded by a fence lies Muyangsa, which prevents unauthorized entry into the shrine. The village leading to Muyang Seowon has earthen walls, and the plaza and parking lot at the entrance provide convenience for visitors. Surrounding old large trees spread out beautifully, resembling the spirit of Confucian scholars, indicating the seowon's age.
