Introduction

Gwangmyeong Cave (formerly Siheung Mine), developed by Japan in 1912 for resource extraction, is an industrial heritage site that directly reflects forced labor and exploitation during the Japanese colonial period as well as traces of modernization and industrialization after liberation. Closed in 1972, it was used as a salted shrimp warehouse for over 40 years before being purchased by Gwangmyeong City in 2011 and transformed into a historical and cultural tourist attraction. Gwangmyeong Cave is recognized as Korea's top cave theme park that combines industrial heritage and cultural value, drawing over one million visitors annually and achieving a miracle as a closed mine that surprised the world.
