Jeungsimsa is a representative Buddhist temple in the Gwangju area, located on the western foothills of Mudeungsan. It was established in the mid-9th century during the Unified Silla period by the monk Cheolgam Seonsa Doyun. In 1094, during the Goryeo Seonjong era, Monk Hyeso reconstructed it, and in the reign of King Sejong of Joseon, Kim Bang renovated it three times, during which a ceremony for five hundred arhats was said to have taken place. The temple was burned down during the Imjin War but was rebuilt in 1609 (the first year of King Gwanghaegun) by the three monks Seokgyeong, Sujang, and Dogwang. It has undergone several restorations through the devotion of believers, but many parts were lost during the Korean War; the main hall and other buildings were only restored in 1970. Jeungsimsa's treasures include the iron seated Vairocana Buddha statue enshrined in Obaekjeon and Birojeon (Saseongjeon) (a designated treasure), the three-story stone pagoda of Jeungsimsa from late Silla (a local tangible cultural asset), the bell pavilion, and the seven-story stone pagoda with the character Beom carved on all four sides of each floor. Especially, Obaekjeon is the oldest surviving building of the early Joseon period (year 25 of Sejong) among temples on Mudeungsan, notable for its rare style with a single-story, three-bay front, three-bay side, gabled roof in the Dasimpo style, similar to Muwoisa's Geungnakjeon in Gangjin. Accordingly, it was designated as Gwangju Cultural Property on November 1, 1986. Various temple stay programs are actively operated, and many hands-on experiences are offered.
