Jungoe Park, located in Buk-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City, is an urban neighborhood park where visitors can relax amid beautiful natural surroundings. The park features expansive lawns and a variety of flowers and trees, making it famous as a spring flower viewing and autumn foliage spot. Around Jungoe Park, there are clustered performance and exhibition facilities such as the Gwangju Biennale Exhibition Hall, Gwangju Culture and Arts Center, and Gwangju Museum of Art that visitors can enjoy together.
The transformation of traditional markets in Gwangju began with the successful change of Daein Market, which is packed without space to step in every Saturday evening. In Gwangju's commercial landscape centered around the bustling areas of Chungjangno and Geumnamno, Daein Market is the only market located within the city, making its popularity and usefulness very high. It is a wholesale market for seafood and vegetables, with a large volume of fish and dried seafood transactions, and also hosts high-quality shops for textiles, silks, aluminum bowls, and rice merchants, so citizens have traditionally shopped at Daein Market after running errands downtown. Daein Market also suffered a slump after the mid-1990s. The emergence of large supermarkets and the unsanitary and outdated appearance of traditional markets caused people to visit less, and stores began to become vacant due to continuous deficits. However, in 2008, empty stores began exhibiting art through the 'Bokdeokbang Project' of the Gwangju Biennale, sparking the rebirth of Daein Market as a 'market where art coexists.' Benefiting from consecutive favorable events, Daein Market was selected as a cultural tourism market in 2013, making art inseparable from the market's identity. Today, Gwangju Daein Market has become a space where artists and merchants live together. As part of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism's Asian Cultural Arts Revitalization Hub Project, the Saturday Art Night Market extension has been confirmed until 2028.
