Traveling Southern Gyeongbuk Region
Gyeongsangbuk-do Gumi City · Today’s itinerary

Traveling Southern Gyeongbuk Region

The Gumi area in Gyeongbuk is a place where the mountain scenery is beautiful. Geumo Mountain Provincial Park is located on the slopes rising from the branch of the Sobaek mountain range and is very deep and vast. The Dorisa Temple here is said to have been named for its beautiful peach blossoms. Traveling through the deep, layered mountains to find an old temple is probably the best healing trip. Let's fully breathe in the unpolluted purity of the deep mountains.

President Park Chung-hee's Birthplace 4

This is the birthplace of former President Park Chung-hee, who served as president for five terms from the 5th to the 9th presidency. The site includes four buildings: the birthplace house, main quarters, incense area, and caretaker's house. The birthplace house is a typical rural thatched cottage built around 1900, covering about 15 pyeong. Park Chung-hee was born here in 1917 and lived here for 20 years until graduating from Daegu Normal School in 1937. In 1964, Gumi City rebuilt the main and guest quarters into their current form for residential and office use. Since President Park's death in 1979, the living room has been used as an incense area. On February 25, 1993, it was designated a Gyeongsangbuk-do monument and is jointly managed by the family and Gumi City; the surrounding land is protected as a preservation area. Next to the birthplace is the Minjok Junheung-gwan Memorial Hall, which highlights President Park’s achievements, permanently preserves his belongings, and serves as a historical education center. The Minjok Junheung-gwan exhibition room displays over 50 personal items used during his presidency, photos recording major achievements, digital videos of the president and key records, graphic representations of his signatures and sayings, and a photo wall creating a bust image of the president with citizens’ faces. It also features the country's first planetarium dome theater, which screens videos about President Park's activities during his lifetime.

Geumosan is a mountain rising from a branch of the Sobaek mountain range and was designated as a provincial park in 1970 with developed tourist facilities. The entire mountain is made of rock, featuring many steep cliffs. A cable car is installed from the foot of the mountain to the waterfall. Since ancient times, it has been one of the Yeongnam 8 scenic spots, with Yaksaam near the summit, Myeonggeum Waterfall (38m tall) halfway up the northern slope, and Haeunsa Temple, built by the Silla monk Doseon. Other attractions include Doseon Cave and the Ma-ae Bodhisattva Standing Statue. The cable car, constructed from the entrance passing Chaemijeong to beside Haeunsa, offers great convenience to visitors. With decks and stairs, it is good for light walks, and the cable car makes it accessible for the elderly. The hiking courses are well developed.

Dorisa Temple is known as the birthplace of Haedong Buddhism and the first temple of Silla, established during the 19th king Nulji (417 AD) by the Goguryeo monk Ado Hwasang, who first introduced Buddhism to Silla where it was previously absent. While searching for a place to practice, Ado Hwasang found this site in winter with peach and plum flowers blooming, seeing it as a good location. With the donation of Morye Jangja, the temple was built and named Dorisa, derived from the peach and plum blossoms. As the sacred site where Ado Hwasang brought the true relics of Buddha (Sejon) to Silla, a gilt bronze hexagonal sarira container was discovered during the restoration of the Sejon Sarira Pagoda in 1976. The gilt bronze sarira container dates from the mid-8th century, designated National Treasure No. 208, and is currently held by the Jikjisa Sacred Treasure Museum. Founded about 70 years before Buddhism was officially recognized in 514 AD (King Beopheung’s 14th year), Dorisa holds valuable cultural properties including the Hwaeom stone pagoda (a treasure), a statue of Ado Hwasang (newly erected in 2002), the Sejon Sarira Pagoda, a stele of Ado Hwasang’s site, and late Joseon Dynasty Buddhist paintings. The temple also operates a templestay to promote Buddhist doctrine and culture.
