Strolling royal tombs and Haengju fortress in Goyang | Travel Course | K-Travel Mate

Haengju Fortress is a mountaintop-style fortress built on the 7th and 8th ridges of Deogyang Mountain in Haengjunae-dong, Deogyang-gu, Goyang-si, Gyeonggi-do. It is an earth-built mountain fortress. The fortress has a double structure consisting of a small inner fortress encircling the summit of Deogyang Mountain and an outer fortress surrounding the valley extending northward. It uses steep cliffs along the riverbank and encloses the wide plains spreading east, north, and west. Pottery shards from the Three Kingdoms period, such as reddish soft earthenware and blue-gray hard pottery, along with roof tile pieces engraved with fishbone patterns and finger marks, have been discovered inside the fortress, suggesting it was used until the Goryeo period. During the Japanese invasions of Korea, General Kwon Yul and approximately 2,300 militia and monks achieved a great victory over about 30,000 Japanese troops. Annual memorial rites and various cultural events are held to commemorate the Haengju victory led by General Kwon Yul, who saved the country from crisis. At Chungjangsa Shrine, where Kwon Yul's portrait is enshrined, incense is burned and memorial rites are performed to invite the general's spirit. It is a place to learn about the patriotism and wisdom of ancestors.

1576년(선조 9)에 지방유림의 공의로 정몽주(鄭夢周)의 학덕과 충절을 추모하기 위해 창건하여 위패를 모셨다. 1609년(광해군 1)에 ‘충렬(忠烈)’이라 사액되었으며, 그 뒤 정보(鄭保)와 이시직(李時稷)을 추가 배향하였다. 선현배향과 지방교육의 일익을 담당하여 오던 중 1871년(고종 8)에 대원군의 서원철폐령으로 훼철되었다. 1911년 유림에서 사우(祠宇)를 중건하였고, 1956년에 강당을 복원하고 1972년 전체를 보완 신축하여 오늘에 이르고 있다. 경내에는 6칸의 사우, 내신문(內神門)·외신문(外神門), 동·서 협문(夾門), 중앙의 마루와 양쪽 협실로 된 8칸의 강당 등이 있다.

Seooreung (西五陵) means 'five tombs located in the west' and refers to five royal tombs: Gyeongneung (敬陵), Changneung (昌陵), Ikneung (翼陵), Myeongneung (明陵), and Hongneung (弘陵). Seooreung is the second largest group of Joseon royal tombs after Donggureung in Guri. In 1457 (the 3rd year of King Sejo), the first tomb, Uimyo (懿墓, Gyeongneung) of Crown Prince Uigyeong, Sejo's first son, was established. In 1470 (the 1st year of King Seongjong), Changneung (昌陵) of King Yejong was the first royal tomb constructed. Subsequently, tombs were added for Crown Prince Sunhoe (Sunchangwon), Queen Ingyeong (Ikneung), King Sukjong (Myeongneung), and Queen Jeongseong (Hongneung), making five tombs and one garden during the Joseon era. In the 1970s, the tomb of Yeongbin Lee (Sugeongwon, 綏慶園) and the Daebin tomb (대빈묘) of Ok-san Bu-dae-bin Jang were relocated here, forming the current Seooreung.

사적 제 200호인 서삼릉은 희릉, 효릉, 예릉의 3릉이 서울 서쪽에 있다하여 붙여진 칭호이다. 희릉은 조선조 제 11대 중종의 계비인 장경 왕후 윤씨의 릉이고, 효릉은 조선조 제 12대 인종과 그 비인 인성왕후 박씨의 릉이며, 예릉은 조선조 제 25대 철종과 그 비인 철인왕후 김씨의 릉이다. 또한 역대 3세자의 묘인 의령원(사도세자의 장자인 의소세손), 효창원(정조의 장자인 문효세자), 소경원(인조의 장자인 소현세자)이 있고, 역대의 후궁, 왕자, 공주, 옹주 등의 묘 51기와 역대 왕의 태가 안장되어 있는 태실이 있다.
