Refreshing makguksu healing trip in Goseong in Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province Goseong County · schedule Other · distance 12km · 4 stops · highl…

Hwajinpo has many scenic spots where you can see dense pine forests, lakes, and the sea all at once. Hwajinpo, the largest natural lake on the East Coast, offers not only a pristine landscape but also places that dream of peace in history such as the Hwajinpo History and Security Exhibition Hall, Kim Il-sung's villa, and the Unification Observatory. Makguksu is a local dish enjoyed in Gangwon-do where buckwheat was cultivated. Goseong's makguksu is especially delicious thanks to the sharp dongchimi broth served with floating ice. The refreshing dongchimi, made in the North Korean style, soothes the hearts of displaced people and helps them briefly forget their longing for their hometown.

This villa is located overlooking Hwajinpo in Hwapo-ri, Geojin-eup, Goseong-gun, Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province, and is commonly called the 'Kim Il-sung Villa.' It was built in 1938 by German H. Weber and was used as a summer retreat from 1948 to 1950 by Kim Il-sung along with his wife Kim Jong-suk, son Kim Jong-il, and daughter Kim Kyong-hui. It is a stone building with one basement floor and two above-ground floors. The army demolished and rebuilt the building in 1964 and repaired it in 1995 for use as a soldiers' rest facility. Inside, exhibits related to the Korean War and North Korea are displayed. Along with the Lee Seung-man Villa and Lee Ki-bung Villa about 1 km away, it forms a historical security exhibition center.
Standing on the 70m high Unification Observatory where the Military Demarcation Line and Southern Limit Line meet, you can see Guseonbong and Haegumgang of Geumgangsan nearby, and on clear days, Oknyubong, Chaehabong, and Ilchulbong are visible. The frontline outpost facing the Demilitarized Zone fence below gives a sense of the tension between South and North Korea. This is a representative tourist site in Goseong visited by over 1.5 million tourists annually, featuring religious facilities such as a statue of the Virgin Mary, Maitreya Buddha statue, and Jeonjin Iron Tower for displaced persons longing for the mountains and families left behind in the North and those praying for reunification, as well as security education exhibits like armored vehicles, tanks, and airplanes. The Donghae Line inter-Korean connecting road, opened in December 2004, enables views of the land route tours to Geumgangsan.
