Geojeon Port is a second-class port designated by the Ministry of Construction, located north of the 38th parallel (38° 26' N). Once considered a remote fishing village due to its location in a restricted area, this place transformed after Geojeon-myeon was upgraded to an eup in 1973, leading to the construction of modern high-rise buildings around the port and developing into a commercial city, growing as the forward base for fisheries in the northern East Sea. The Taebaek mountain range clouds surround the coast, making Geojeon Port a naturally excellent fishing harbor from ancient times. Its peak population was about 25,000 in the 1970s during the squid boom. The port's development was driven by pollock, and it is known for its variety of specialty foods. These include myeongtaeseogeori (pollock gills mixed freshly with radish strips) and myeongran sikhae (pollock roe marinated with glutinous millet). Major catches include pollock, octopus, flatfish, abalone, sea cucumber, and sea squirts. Natural sea urchin roe called undan is harvested and exported to Japan. The opening of the Yeongdong Expressway and paving of the Hangyeryeong and Jinburyeong roads have greatly improved seafood distribution and enhanced fishermen's livelihoods.
Hwajinpo is the largest lagoon area in South Korea, formed by the development of a spit near Hwajinpo beach that blocked the entrance of the bay. A lagoon is a landform developed when a bay is formed by the post-glacial sea level rise flooding the coast, and its entrance is blocked by a sandbar or spit. This landform represents the Neogene Quaternary period, characterized by climate change. The lagoon also serves as an important ecological corridor connecting the sea and land. Frequent exchanges between freshwater and seawater create a unique natural environment where marine and freshwater organisms coexist, giving it high conservation value. Hwajinpo, shaped like the number 8, is divided into South Lake and North Lake, with South Lake being larger and the waterway to the sea located in North Lake. The name Hwajinpo comes from the abundance of sea buckthorn around the lake. The area is also widely known as the filming site of the final scene of the popular drama 'Autumn Fairy Tale' aired about ten years ago. Nearby tourist attractions include the Kim Il-sung villa, the Syngman Rhee villa, and the Lee Ki-bung villa.
This villa is located overlooking Hwajinpo in Hwapo-ri, Geojin-eup, Goseong-gun, Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province, and is commonly called the 'Kim Il-sung Villa.' It was built in 1938 by German H. Weber and was used as a summer retreat from 1948 to 1950 by Kim Il-sung along with his wife Kim Jong-suk, son Kim Jong-il, and daughter Kim Kyong-hui. It is a stone building with one basement floor and two above-ground floors. The army demolished and rebuilt the building in 1964 and repaired it in 1995 for use as a soldiers' rest facility. Inside, exhibits related to the Korean War and North Korea are displayed. Along with the Lee Seung-man Villa and Lee Ki-bung Villa about 1 km away, it forms a historical security exhibition center.

Standing on the 70m high Unification Observatory where the Military Demarcation Line and Southern Limit Line meet, you can see Guseonbong and Haegumgang of Geumgangsan nearby, and on clear days, Oknyubong, Chaehabong, and Ilchulbong are visible. The frontline outpost facing the Demilitarized Zone fence below gives a sense of the tension between South and North Korea. This is a representative tourist site in Goseong visited by over 1.5 million tourists annually, featuring religious facilities such as a statue of the Virgin Mary, Maitreya Buddha statue, and Jeonjin Iron Tower for displaced persons longing for the mountains and families left behind in the North and those praying for reunification, as well as security education exhibits like armored vehicles, tanks, and airplanes. The Donghae Line inter-Korean connecting road, opened in December 2004, enables views of the land route tours to Geumgangsan.
