Gyeryongsan National Park, the premier mountain in Chungnam, was designated as Korea's second national park in 1968 and covers an area of 65.335㎢. Around the highest peak of Gyeryongsan, Cheonhwangbong (847m), there are about 10 valleys formed among 16 peaks. The mountain's ridgeline resembles a dragon wearing a rooster's comb, which is why it is called Gyeryong (鷄龍). The mountain’s landscape is cozy yet ever-changing, making day trips possible from major cities like Seoul and Daejeon, attracting visitors year-round. It is also noted for its excellent feng shui and was once considered as a possible capital location in the Joseon Dynasty, serving as a sacred mountain where national rites were held. Donghaksa Valley is located in the direction of Donghaksa within Gyeryongsan National Park, Gongju-si, Chungnam. It corresponds to the 5th of the eight scenic views of Gyeryong and has wildflowers growing, always surrounded by green forests where clear water sounds and bird songs can be heard. It stretches about 3.5 km from Hakbawi Rock to Gwaneumbong Pass. Walking like an immortal under the old trees at the valley entrance, you reach Donghaksa, which has a nuns' training center, and just below it is Sam-eung-gak Sookmojeon, enshrining Silla’s founder and loyal official Park Jaesang. Looking up from Donghaksa, you can see the distant Ssalgyae Ridge and northwest ridge approaching the horizon. About 1.5 km upstream leads to Eunseon Waterfall, famed for its harmonious natural scenery. Beyond Eunseon Waterfall, the path to Gwaneumbong is somewhat steep but offers refreshing forest bathing amid dense underbrush. Donghaksa Valley is always beautiful, with the spring when fresh greenery blooms being the best season.
Donghaksa Temple was founded during the reign of Seongdeokwang of Silla and is famous as a Buddhist training center for nuns. It is said that Sangwonjo-sa built a hermitage during the Silla period, where he practiced asceticism and after his passing, a sibling pagoda was erected there. At that time, the temple was called Cheongryangsa, as it was believed to be the site where Manjusri Bodhisattva descended, but now only the temple site remains along with Sangwonam Hermitage. To honor the founder of Silla and the loyal patriot Park Jae-sang, Donggye Temple (東鷄寺) was built and the temple was expanded, after which the name changed to Donghaksa. Donghaksa houses Samunggak (三隱閣) honoring loyalists of Goryeo, and Sukmojeon (肅慕殿), which enshrines the spirit tablets of King Danjong (端宗) and loyal officials, providing an opportunity to reflect on our history. There is a hiking course connecting the three temples of Gyeryongsan Mountain, and a way to follow the ridges from Geumsubong to several temples of Bingaesan on the Gyeryongsan ridge.
