Introduction

Located on the foothills of Dongri Mountain, Taeansa Temple was rebuilt in 742 by three new monks during the reign of King Gyeongdeok of Silla. In 847, it was reestablished as a Seon Buddhist temple by National Preceptor Hyecheol, forming the Dongrisan sect, one of the Nine Mountain Schools. Later, during the reign of Goryeo's King Taejo, Great Monk Hyecheol resided here, constructing 132 rooms and creating a large-scale temple, becoming the central temple of the Dongrisan sect. In the early Goryeo period, both Songgwangsa and Hwaeomsa were branch temples of this temple. In 1925, Choi Nam-seon visited and praised it as a renowned temple since the Silla era and the first Seon sect temple in the Haedong region, possibly an ancient sacred site. During the Korean War, 15 buildings including the main hall were burned down but have since been restored. There are five treasures on site including the sarira pagoda of National Preceptor Hyecheol and the Gwangja Seonsa pagoda. The Neungpagak pavilion, built in a scenic spot in the Dongri Mountain valley, is also notable. The temple valley is known for its spring fresh greenery, cool summer streams and lush foliage, and beautiful autumn foliage, making it a popular walking trail.
