[The sacred rocky peak of Baekdudaegan] Heiyangsan (999m) stands prominently on the boundary between Gaeun-eup, Mungyeong-si, Gyeongbuk, and Yeonpung-myeon, Goesan-gun, Chungbuk, rising sharply along the Baekdudaegan mountain range. Although it is lower than nearby peaks like Joryeongsan (1026m) or Baekhwasan (1064m), it is considered the most outstanding in terms of beauty. Jijeung Daesa (824–884), a Silla-era monk and founder of Bongamsa Temple on Heiyangsan, praised the mountain's form, saying, "The mountain is surrounded on all sides like folding screens, as if the wings of a phoenix are rising through the clouds, and the valley waters are layered like a hundred bands, resembling a dragon's waist resting on the rocks." The view from the summit is grand and beautiful. Below are Bongamsa Temple and Bongamyonggok Valley, beyond which the ridges of Daeyasan and Songnisan rise sharply. To the west, mountains such as Jangseongbong, Akheebong, and Gunjasan in inland Chungbuk surround the area like folding screens. The northeast view extends endlessly over the ridges of Baekhwasan, Undalsan, and Juheulsan, resembling blooming lotus petals in their exquisite beauty.
