Geoje, the second largest island in South Korea after Jeju, is well known as a natural tourist destination with Haegumgang's beautiful scenery and numerous scenic coastlines. However, it also holds significant value as a site for historical exploration. This includes the largest prisoner-of-war camp during the Korean War on Geoje Island, Bangok Seowon—dedicated to Joseon scholars centered around the Confucian scholar Song Si-yeol—and the Haegumgang Theme Museum, which recreates scenes from the 1950s-60s with over 50,000 exhibits. Visiting Geoje to revisit its history while holding your children's hands can be a meaningful experience.

Banggok Seowon is a seowon built on the site where scholar Song Si-yeol of the Wooam school stayed when he was exiled to Geoje Island in 1679 (the 5th year of King Sukjong). It was established in 1704 (the 30th year of King Sukjong) by Geoje Confucian scholars Yun Do-won and Ok Sam-heon to honor the learning and virtue of the late Moonjeonggong Wooam Song Si-yeol. Later, additional figures such as Jukcheon Kim Jin-gyu, Mongwa Kim Chang-jip, Hakgong Lee Joong-hyup, Munchunggong Min Jin-won, and Jeongmungong Kim Soo-geun were enshrined. Although abolished under the order to close seowons by Heungseon Daewongun, in 1906 Geoje Confucian scholars established an altar and a memorial stele at the site and held autumn rituals annually. In 1971, Geoje Hyanggyo's headmaster Yun Byung-jae initiated restoration, and in 1974 the Wooamsa was rebuilt after the Confucian assembly demolished three nearby old houses and used the materials to repair and rebuild the lecture hall, restoring the seowon’s former appearance. From 2010, a three-year large-scale restoration project was carried out, resulting in its current form. Dongrokdang enshrines Dongrok Jeong Hon-seong, praised as a noble gentleman by Chusa Kim Jeong-hui.
Geoje-do Prisoner of War Camp Historical Park was established on the site of the Geoje-do POW camp, which was installed to house North Korean and Chinese prisoners of war captured during the Korean War. It accommodated up to 173,000 war prisoners and operated as the largest POW camp during the Korean War. Despite the tragedy of war, it was a paradoxical stage where efforts were made to uphold humanity according to the Geneva Convention. Within the park is the remaining POW camp site, designated as Gyeongsangnam-do Cultural Property No. 99 in 1983. The park uses various collections, records, and video materials to develop exhibitions and educational content, making it a living educational site on war history and a mecca of dark tourism.
Hakdong Black Pearl Pebble Beach covers an area of 30,000㎡, with a length of 1.2 km and a width of 50 m, located in the southern part of Geoje Island. The clear and clean water of the South Sea causes waves that roll the pebbles, creating a beautiful sizzling sound, which was selected as one of Korea's 100 natural sounds. Unlike other beaches on the South Sea, the water depth here is deep, and the waves are rough, requiring some caution, but the beach is well equipped for marine leisure activities such as banana boating. Additionally, from the pier located within Hakdong Black Pearl Pebble Beach, tourists can take a cruise to Haegumgang, known as the Diamond of the Sea, and Oedo, adorned with various exotic tropical forests. It is a must-visit spot for tourists coming to Geoje Island, even if not for swimming. In spring and autumn, visitors to Haenyeohaesang National Park, including Haegumgang, come by sea, and in summer, vacationers gather from all over the country.
