Geochang Traditional Market has been a bustling marketplace since the Joseon Dynasty, where merchants from surrounding areas such as Hapcheon, Hamyang, and Sancheong gathered, and its history continues to this day. On days ending in 1 and 6 each month, a five-day market is held, drawing large crowds. There are around 1,600 traditional markets nationwide, and this market was selected as one of the '50 Traditional Markets You Want to Visit.' It is also operated as part of the Cultural Tourism Market Development Project and the Youth Mall Creation and Revitalization Project. Geochang Market uses the character Ohong, the golden monkey, symbolizing a mythical creature from Geumwonsan Legend in Geochang. Ohong eats the five Hong fruits and transforms into a radiant being that neither dies nor ages, bringing fortune to people. Eating Geochang's Ohong fruits—apple, strawberry, omija, aedoni (pig), and aewoo (Korean beef)—is believed to promote health and longevity. The market sells five types of lunchboxes called '5 Hong 5 Bok' lunchboxes: Sudolunchbox (mugwort rice cake soup and red bean porridge) for longevity, Bulunchbox (aedoni tortilla & bugak salad) for wealth, Guilunchbox (aedoni jokbal cold dish) for success, Gangdolunchbox (tofu cutlet and omija ade) for health, and Dasolunchbox (Ohong bibimbap and soup) for happiness.
