Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province Gangneung · Today’s itinerary

In the Hometowns of Shin Saimdang and Heo Nanseolheon, Gangneung

Ojukheon in Gangneung is a deeper and broader hometown than expected, where Yulgok and Shin Saimdang were born, and toward Gyeongpo Lake, it produced many literary figures such as Chusa Kim Jeonghee, Kim Hongdo, and Song Si-yeol. In particular, it is also the filming location of ‘Saimdang’, starring Lee Young-ae, which will air in the second half of this year. At the birthplace of Heo Nanseolheon, one can still feel the breath of this tragic female poet.

Seongyojang is the most well-preserved and dignified nobleman’s house in the Gangwon-do region. Located about 4km from Gyeongpo in Gangneung-si, Seongyojang represents the residences of the upper class during the Joseon Dynasty and is designated as a National Folk Cultural Heritage site. When Gyeongpo Lake was larger, the village was called Baedari Village (船橋里) because people traveled by boat to cross over; the name Seongyojang originates from this. In 1703 during the reign of King Yeongjo of Joseon, Lee Naebeon, a descendant of Prince Hyoryeong, built the house on a site considered auspicious, which he discovered while chasing a weasel. His descendants still live there today. The total floor area is 1,051.24m² (318 pyeong), featuring a main house, annex, East Byeoldang, family shrine, and other buildings surrounded by long corridors, along with the Hwallaejeong pavilion built over a pond of several hundred pyeong in front of the gate, showing a perfect structure with a garden. Seongyojang is valuable not only for its buildings but also as a precious resource for studying residential life and household items in the late Joseon period, and the scenery blending with the surroundings is beautiful.

Anmok Beach, located in Gyeonso-dong, Gangneung-si, Gangwon, is a 500-meter long, 20,000㎡ white sand beach suitable for families to enjoy summer outings. Adjacent to the beach is Anmok Port, where 23 fishing vessels return by 9 a.m. after catching seaweed in spring; flounder, halibut (gwang-eo), squid, octopus, and manila clams (jjaebok) in summer; and sandfish (doromuk), pollock, and rockfish in autumn and winter. Around the end of August, when the summer season ends, mackerel chase anchovy schools close to the shore, and it is common for people to scoop up the anchovies washed ashore using buckets or nets called bandu. Additionally, this place is famous for its coffee street where visitors can enjoy coffee with a sea view.
