Cultural heritage tour through a thousand years of Gangneung

Gangneung is a region that holds a deep and diverse history from prehistoric times through the Joseon Dynasty. Since the establishment of Haslla Province during the reign of King Jijeung of Silla, it saw the rise of powerful local clans in the Unified Silla period and was home to the Sagulsan school among the Nine Mountain Seon sects of Buddhism. It is a place with many significant cultural heritage sites preserving important history, including the nationally designated treasure Gangneung Imyeongwan Sammun, Gulsansa Temple site, and Gangneung Hyanggyo.

Gangneung Hyanggyo is the earliest Hyanggyo recorded in historical documents in Korea and the only Hyanggyo that still enshrines the memorial tablets of sages worshipped during the Joseon Dynasty. Among its main buildings, Gangneung Hyanggyo Daeseongjeon, Gangneung Hyanggyo Myeongnyundang, Dongmu, Seomu, and Jeonrang have been designated as treasures. Among these, the Myeongnyundang located at the front was first built as a pavilion called 'Namru' in 1413 and underwent several renovations. It began to be used as an educational space called Myeongnyundang after a major restoration was completed in 1644. It is currently a building with 11 bays wide at the front and 2 bays deep, the largest Myeongnyundang among Korean Hyanggyo. Although the exact founding period is uncertain, it is generally known to have been established in the late Goryeo period to enshrine memorial tablets of classical Confucian scholars, provide secondary education regionally, and promote the moral education of the local people. After being destroyed, it was established in 1313 by Kim Seung-in, a local military official of Gangwon-do, under Hwabusang. After another destruction in 1411, it was rebuilt in 1413 by Lee Maeng-sang, magistrate of Gangneung, with the support of 68 local Confucian scholars. During the Joseon Dynasty, the state provided farmland, slaves, and books to support it, and instructors taught students. Currently, it no longer functions as an educational institution but holds Seokjeon rites in spring and autumn and incense offerings on the first and fifteenth days of each lunar month. One Jeongyo and several Jangui manage its operations.

Gangneung Imyeonggwan Sammun is one of the gates located in Yonggang-dong, Gangneung-si, Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province. It became a national heritage site in 1962 and is a pride and landmark of Gangneung. Its old name was 'Gangneung Gaksa Gate,' but since April 2010, it has been called 'Imyeonggwan Sammun.' Imyeonggwan Sammun is a single-story gate with a gabled roof, featuring a dignified form with three bays and two sections, and is an excellent octagonal gate. The exact construction date is unclear, but based on its architectural style, it is estimated to be from the early Joseon period. Although small in scale, it is a beautiful heritage passed down by ancestors, showcasing outstanding structure and beauty in Korean wooden architecture. Gulsan Temple is located about 6 km southwest of Gangneung city. It was a temple founded by Beomil Guksa in the 9th year of King Munseong of Silla (847) and was one of the nine main temples of the 5 schools and 9 mountains sect of Silla Buddhism. The exact period when Gulsan Temple was abandoned is uncertain, but it is estimated to be around the late Goryeo or early Joseon dynasty. The area of Gulsan Temple has now changed into farmland, so its exact scale and layout are unknown, but it is said to have been the largest temple in the Yeongdong region. Currently, the site contains the Gulsan Temple Site Dangganjiju (Treasure) and the Gulsan Temple Site Stone Buddha Seated Statue (Gangwon-do Cultural Property). There is also Hakbawi rock and Seokcheon (Stone Spring), related to the birth legend of Beomil Guksa, which gives an idea of the temple’s original size. The Seokcheon was lost due to damage from Typhoon Rusa and is temporarily restored.
