Cycling trip to Ganghwa DMZ following the wind of peace in Incheon Ganghwa-gun · schedule Day trip · distance 32km · 4 stops · highlights Gyodong Swallo…

There is a peace bike path approximately 30km long on Gyodongdo, Ganghwa-gun. It is a circular course that passes along the coastal barbed wire fence road and farm roads, passes Manghyangdae with a view of the northern scenery, goes through unpaved roads and coastal lake paths, then returns to the starting point. You can use your own bicycle or rent one at Gyodong Jebijip, the tourist information center in Gyodong-myeon. Nearby Gyodong Jebijip is Daeryong Market, which is worth visiting. This market was established by refugees settling after the Korean War. The narrow market alleys are densely packed with the scenes of an old traditional market and recently established stylish shops. After about an hour of cycling, you arrive at Manghyangdae on Bammeori Mountain in the northern part of Gyodongdo. The view of the north seen through the telescope installed at Manghyangdae is so close it feels within reach. On the way back after touring Gyodongdo, stopping by Cafe Joyangbangjik in Ganghwa-eup for a cup of coffee is a good way to end the trip.

Daeryong Market is an alley market recreated to resemble Yeonbaek Market in the hometown of residents who temporarily fled from Yeonbaek-gun, Hwanghae-do to Gyodongdo during the Korean War, as the Han River estuary became the division line preventing their return. For over 50 years, it was the economic center of Gyodongdo, but as most of the displaced elders who founded the market passed away and the population rapidly declined, the market significantly shrank. However, since the opening of the Gyodong Bridge in July 2014, Daeryong Market, with its 1960s movie set-like appearance, has become a must-visit spot for tourists capturing its charm on camera. Since late March, the Gyodong Giga Island (also known as 'Gyodong Jebi House') has been operating, offering IT-based tourism guidance, bicycle and smartwatch rentals, as well as various experience programs such as 'VR video experiences' and 'making the Gyodong newspaper' for visitors.

Founded in 1933 as Ganghwa's first rayon factory established with domestic capital, Joyang Textile fell into ruin as Ganghwa textiles declined over time. The dilapidated building was reborn as a large café. The crumbling walls became a stylish art gallery and cinema, the long workbenches were transformed into coffee tables, and the space once abandoned by machines and people was filled with antiques from China and Europe. British doors with broken glass, round mirrors from old Czech trains, and a carp-shaped pastry machine that struggled each winter are arranged naturally as if they had always been there. The 990㎡ (about 300 pyeong) factory site and building frame remain intact, preserving the stories of time throughout the café. A variety of beverages and cakes are currently sold.
