Chuam Beach is a beautiful beach with a coastline of unique rock formations and fine white sand. The beach is relatively small but sufficient for enjoying the stunning scenery. It is famous as a sunrise spot, especially for Chuam Chotdaebawi, a rock formation that attracts visitors year-round. The rock that appears in the background of the first verse of the national anthem resembles a candle flame with the sun hanging on its pointed tip, hence the name 'Chuam Chotdaebawi.' About 200 meters from Chuam Chotdaebawi is the sea suspension bridge, another attraction. The 72-meter-long Chuam Chotdaebawi suspension bridge, installed over the rocks crossing the sea, offers thrill and photo opportunities with the East Sea as the backdrop. On the way from Chuam Chotdaebawi to the suspension bridge is Bukpyeong Heoamjeong, a pavilion built in 1361 by Shim Dong-ro, the progenitor of the Samcheok Shim clan, who retired there. The current pavilion dates from its renovation around 1790. The end of the suspension bridge connects to the Chuam Sculpture Park, making it convenient to visit both together.
Daegwallyeong Tourist Zone was designated as a tourist zone on August 31, 1994, and is widely distributed across Gangneung-si, Donghae-si, Samcheok-si, Hoengseong-gun, and Pyeongchang-gun. Gangneung-si, the area closest to Daegwallyeong, is a representative marine tourist destination of Korea featuring Gyeongpo Lake and Gyeongpodae, and is a tourist site where traditional culture lives on centered around Ojukheon and Seongyojang. Donghae-si has Donghae Port and Mukho Port where visitors can enjoy the lively harbor scenery. Especially at Mukho Port, one can enjoy Mukho Lighthouse and Bukpyeong 5-day Market. Samcheok-si, located at the southernmost part of Gangwon-do, is a marine leisure tourist destination with Hwanseon Cave and Daegum Cave, the largest limestone caves in Korea, making it ideal for cave exploration travel. Hoengseong-gun is famous for Hanwoo beef production and hosts the Hoengseong Hanwoo Festival every year. Additionally, various rural experiences are available. Pyeongchang-gun is a plateau area at 700m above sea level with many resorts, called the mecca of winter sports. Located at the foot of Balwangsan, a famous mountain in Pyeongchang-gun, Gangwon Province, this resort is known as the 'Mecca of Korean skiing.' It opened Korea's first ski resort in 1975 and was the second in Asia to be certified by the International Ski Federation (FIS) to hold international competitions. Daegwallyeong-myeon, where the resort is situated, has an average annual snowfall of 250 cm and long winters, allowing visitors to enjoy skiing on slopes covered with natural snow. Besides skiing, it features diverse facilities including a hotel, condos, a golf course, water park, and the Balwangsan sightseeing cable car. Balwangsan, standing at 1,458 meters where Monayongpyeong is located, is an excellent ecological travel destination with rare trees and wildflowers. Various wellness programs let visitors fully enjoy Balwangsan's beautiful nature, such as listening to mountain and rare tree stories from a forest interpreter, music therapy using the Tibetan meditation tool singing bowl, and healing yoga, all offering high-quality rest in Balwangsan's pure atmosphere. The Balwangsan Gi Skywalk at the mountain summit is a famous spot to appreciate the panoramic views. A shuttle bus runs regularly between KTX Jinbu Station and Monayongpyeong.
