Chungcheongbuk-do Danyang-gun · Today’s itinerary

Silla Advances to the Hangang, Building Fortresses and Stele

Take a historical journey along the Namhangang waterway in Danyang. After crossing Jukryeong and capturing Jeokseong, territory of Goguryeo, Silla built fortresses and erected the Jeokseongbi stele to stabilize the people. This marked the opening move of Silla's advance into the Han River basin. Nearby, the Suyanggae Prehistoric Exhibition Hall displays Late Paleolithic artifacts discovered in the area flooded by the Chungju Dam, offering a glimpse into the lives of Paleolithic people.

Danyang Silla Jeokseongbi is a stele located within Seongjaesan Jeokseongsanseong. It was erected to stabilize public sentiment after Silla occupied Jeokseong, then territory of Goguryeo. It stands 93 cm tall, 107 cm wide, and 25 cm thick, and was designated a National Treasure on May 22, 1979. Although the exact date of creation is debated, based on the Samguk Sagi it is estimated to be from the 6th to 11th year of King Jinheung’s reign (545–550). Unlike other initials erected directly by King Jinheung, this Jeokseongbi commemorates territorial incorporation. While not a sunsubi (a stele erected during royal inspection tours to check on governance), it holds great value as a cheokgyeongbi (a stele commemorating territorial incorporation) embodying similar spirit. The upper part of the stele is partially cut off but is generally well preserved. It lists the names of 10 high officials who received royal orders, highlighting figures such as Isabu, Bichibu, and Muryuk who had notable achievements under King Jinheung, and new official titles like Daesangdeunghagganji (大象等下干支) attract academic interest. The inscription contains around 430 to 440 characters, with 288 fully interpreted. Carved in intaglio with writing between Yeseo and Haeseo calligraphy styles, it plays an important role in calligraphy research. Its discovery provides important academic data on Silla's territorial expansion, influential figures, policies for incorporating conquered lands, official ranks, and promulgation of law codes at the time. The site offers a good view of the Namhan River from Jeokseong, indicating its role as a fortress during the Three Kingdoms period.

Danyang Jeokseong is a mountain fortress built with stones located at the top of Seongjaesan in Habang-ri, Danseong-myeon, Danyang-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do. It is a stone-wall fortress with a length of 923m, though mostly collapsed, with only parts of the inner wall on the northeast side standing 2-3m high and 1m wide. It is a mountaintop fortress encircling the peak of Seongjaesan and its southern slope, with gates found in three locations: southwest, east, and southeast. Around the fortress, ancient roads extend toward both upstream and downstream of the Namhan River, and paths open to the east and west. The fortress occupies a strategic transportation hub, facilitating movement via the Namhan River toward Yeongwol and Chungju, and also toward Jecheon across the river. The Danyang Silla Jeokseong Stele was discovered here, which is important for understanding the nature, purpose, and date of the fortress. This stele dates to no later than 551. Therefore, Jeokseong is considered an important strategic fortress built before mid-6th century to serve as an advanced base for Silla's incursion upstream along the Namhan River. Danyang Jeokseong is relatively large among Three Kingdoms period mountain fortresses, holding significant meaning for studying shifts in power between Silla and Goguryeo. Its very sturdy construction also makes it valuable for research on Silla's fortress-building techniques.
