Situated between Damyang-gun and Gwangju Metropolitan City, Damyang Wetland is one of the best places to experience the ecology of Yeongsangang River. It is a habitat for the hawk, wildcat, Boreal digging frog (endangered species), and kestrel. It became the first river wetland to be designated as a wetland reserve in 2004.

Damyang Wetland, part of the Damyang Bamboo Forest which is one of the eight scenic views of the Yeongsan River, is the top site for ecological exploration of the Yeongsan River and a representative natural purification facility. It is South Korea's first inland wetland. Due to its abundant species, it was designated as a wetland protection area (July 2004), uniquely so among river wetlands. It is the first river wetland formed in the main stream of the Yeongsan River designated as a wetland protection area, maintaining a natural river form. The floodplain hosts a large bamboo cluster, and unlike typical river wetlands, diverse woody plant species densely populate the area, maintaining an ecologically excellent natural environment. Various animals including endangered species such as otters, hawks, wildcats, greater white-fronted geese, white-necked stilts, and snakes inhabit the area, which is protected by the Ministry of Environment. It is a site for ecological learning visited frequently by children from elementary to high school. Located on the boundary between Damyang and Gwangju, it is also a popular nearby excursion spot for Gwangju residents.
