Daegu Arboretum is a representative case of environmental restoration that transformed a site where Daegu citizens' household waste of 4.1 million tons was buried from 1986 to 1990 into a natural ecological space on an area of about 74,000 pyeong. Construction began in 1997, and it opened in May 2002, becoming an urban arboretum that restores natural ecological environments and offers citizens a space for rest and learning. The arboretum consists of 21 zones, including coniferous forest, broadleaf forest, flower and tree garden, wildflower garden, medicinal plant garden, and dye garden. It planted about 60,000 trees of over 400 species and about 130,000 herbaceous plants of 800 species across 1,100 flower beds. Additionally, it exhibits around 300 bonsai pieces of 40 species, 2,000 cacti of 200 species, and about 300 unique stones, providing visitors with diverse opportunities to appreciate plants. Currently, about 1,750 species of plants are displayed. Composed of 25 themed gardens and located close to the city center, this arboretum is cherished as an urban arboretum where citizens can observe nature, participate in tours and learning, and enjoy leisure.

Missionaries Switz House 4

This house was the residence of American missionaries (Switz, Henderson, Archibald Campbell, etc.) who came to Daegu for missionary work starting in 1893. It is a Western-style building constructed around 1906-1910 with 2 floors above ground and 1 basement floor, located on Dongsan (currently Cheongna Hill) facing southwest. The foundation was made with castle stones from Ansan Rock brought during the demolition of Daegu Eupseong in 1907, and the walls are built with red bricks. It is a two-story Han-Yang hybrid brick building. It was designated a Daegu Metropolitan City Tangible Cultural Property on June 15, 1989. In August 1981, it was acquired from Dongsan Hospital and used as a residence, during which Korean-style roof tiles were replaced with zinc sheets and some interior finish materials were replaced. The floor plan includes a veranda on the south right leading to the entrance, which connects directly via the entrance hall to the living room and reception room. Around the living room are arranged a bedroom, stairwell, bathroom, kitchen, and dining room. The roof was originally a Korean-style tiled gable roof with shed shapes on the south and north sides but was improved with zinc sheets. On October 1, 1999, on the 100th anniversary of Keimyung University Dongsan Medical Center’s founding, it opened as a Missionary Museum. The first floor exhibits various Bibles, missionary relics, and photographic materials on the introduction of Christianity; the second floor displays a model of the tabernacle and Old and New Testament-related items purchased locally in Israel. Missionaries Switz House well demonstrates American residential and lifestyle styles and Han-Yang blended architectural techniques, serving as an important building to understand Protestant missionaries in Daegu and the architectural context at that time. Cheongna Hill offers many sights, including Missionary Blair House, Chamnis House, Daegu Jeil Church, Dongmusaenggang Song Monument, the third-generation descendant of Korea’s first Western apple tree, and in May, known as the queen of seasons, the 200-year-old white rice flower Ipap trees bloom. The building is privately owned and not open to visitors inside.

Nokdong Seowon, located at the foot of Samjeongsan in Urok-ri, Gachang-myeon, Dalseong-gun, Daegu Gwangyeoksi, is a seowon dedicated to General Kim Chung-seon of Mohadang. It was established in 1791 (the 15th year of King Jeongjo) after Confucian scholars petitioned to honor the general's achievements. Later, in 1868 (the 5th year of King Gojong), it was abolished by Heungseon Daewongun's seowon abolition order but was restored in 1914. As the descendants grew, the original site became too small, so with government support, it was relocated and expanded in 1972 to its current location. Inside the seowon grounds are Hyangyangmun gate, Nokdong Seowon, Nokdongsa, Chungjeolgwan, and General Kim’s tomb located behind the seowon.

Every autumn, the 'Kim Gwangseok Singing Contest' is held around Bangcheon Market and Dongseong-ro to commemorate him. ◎ Travel info to experience the charm of Hallyu – The drama featured Kim Gwangseok Street, a favorite dating spot for Robin and Hana before their breakup. It is a street where visitors can stroll along the alleys next to Bangcheon Market, viewing various murals themed on Kim Gwangseok's life and songs. The alleys have many cafes and restaurants popular on SNS, making it a favorite dating spot for couples.
