Maeyang Seowon was established in 1705 (31st year of King Sukjong) to honor Song Wongi (1548–1615). Later generations added his descendants Song Myeonggi and Song Iseok to the enshrinement. In 1868 (5th year of King Gojong), it was closed following the Daewon-gun's decree to abolish seowons. It was repeatedly restored and damaged until it was finally restored in 2006 and remains to this day. Maeyang Seowon illustrates the growth of the Yaro Song clan, who relocated to Chilgok and settled there starting with the ancestral enshrinement of Song Wongi. It is one of the representative clan seowons in the Chilgok region during the late Joseon period. The seowon is entirely formed on a stone terrace. Its main gate, Yangjeongmun with stairs at the front, faces the study hall, Guindang. To the northeast of Guindang, on a raised platform, the shrine Sanghyeonsa is placed with a separate wall and inner gate, forming a parallel layout. The outer gate bears the plaque Yangjeongmun, the study hall displays Maeyang Seowon, and the shrine is inscribed with Sanghyeonsa.
