Cutting Across the Lake to Enjoy Summer in Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province Chuncheon City · schedule Day trip · distance 34km · 5 stops · highli…

How about enjoying a journey along the rivers and lakes in Chuncheon rather than just spending a summer vacation? There is plenty of cool water in Chuncheon just by looking at it. However, this is not a trip to appreciate the scenery of the rivers and lakes from afar. You can enjoy summer floating on the water as if walking on the road with your own feet. Ride a wooden canoe and travel by boat along Soyang Lake to visit the thousand-year-old temple Cheongpyeongsa.
This course is a sample 2-day itinerary. Save it as-is or expand it into an AI itinerary.

Soyang Lake is an artificial lake located in Sinbuk-eup, Chuncheon-si, Gangwon-do, created in October 1973 by blocking the Soyang River with the Soyanggang Dam, the largest earth-fill dam in East Asia. It covers an area of 1,608 hectares with a storage capacity of about 2.9 billion tons. The straight-line water surface distance is 60 km, and the curved water surface distance measures 120 km, making it the largest inland lake in Korea, often called the 'inland sea.' Around Soyanggang Dam, walking paths and trails are established, and the 2.5 km round-trip course from the dam top to Palgakjeong Pavilion offers stunning views of Soyang Lake. From the Soyanggang pier, taking a cruise boat allows visits to Cheongpyeongsa Temple, a Goryeo Dynasty temple, with the sight of gently floating over the clear lake being very moving. The dam top has various amenities, including restaurants, coffee shops, a water culture center, and rest areas. The water culture center is free to enter, making it a great place to visit together.
Cheongpyeongsa is a historic temple that once housed the Gukbo-designated Geungnakjeon building and Munsuwon-gi, written by the Goryeo dynasty's top calligrapher Tanyeon. However, these cultural relics were lost during the Korean War. Later, Geungnakjeon was restored in 1975 and Munsuwon-gi in 2008. Additionally, the temple preserves several other cultural heritages such as the rotating gate, three-story stone pagoda, Jinrakgong Ijahyeon's memorial tower, and Hwanteokdang's memorial tower. The Goryeo-era garden style, which actively utilizes the natural terrain around the temple, is also noteworthy. Centered on the rectangular pond Yeongji, it features a harmonious arrangement of strange rocks and waterfalls, boasting a splendid landscape that attracted many literary figures including Ije-hyeon and Kim Si-seup, who stayed here or left poems.
Makguksu is a type of noodle made by coarsely grinding buckwheat flour with only the outer shell removed. In the past, buckwheat noodles were served to special guests in the Chuncheon region. After the Korean War (6·25), they became popular as people started making and selling the noodles to overcome hardships. The area near Soyangho in Chuncheon, Gangwon-do, is especially famous for Makguksu Street. It gathers popular restaurants visited even by Chuncheon locals, making it bustling with customers on both weekends and weekdays. Buckwheat makguksu is delicious when served with kimchi or dongchimi broth, or mixed with vegetables and seasoning, accompanied by vinegar, mustard, and broth. It is also good to pair with other local Gangwon dishes like buckwheat pancakes (memilbuchim) and buckwheat rolls (memiljeonbyeong). Nearby Soyangho Makguksu Street, you can enjoy the atmosphere of Uiamho at Jungdo Tourist Site and visit the Animation Museum, the first in Korea themed on animation, making it a great travel combination.

Along with Soyanggang Skywalk, it is one of Chuncheon's two major skywalks, located on the Uiamho Bicycle Road between the Kim Yujeong Literary Monument at the Uiamho lakeside and Chuncheon Songam Sports Town. The Uiam Skywalk, connected to the bicycle road's water bridge section, consists of a 10m straight section and a circular section with a diameter of 10m, both 12m above the water surface. The entire floor is made of transparent tempered glass, allowing visitors to fully enjoy the feeling of walking on water. From the skywalk, Samaksan Mountain and Uiamho Lake spread out like a picture before your eyes. It offers a different scenic view of Chuncheon compared to Soyanggang Skywalk. Access is closer from the Kim Yujeong Literary Monument side, but parking space is limited; self-driving visitors are recommended to use the public parking lot near Chuncheon Songam Sports Town. From the public parking lot, it takes about 15 minutes on foot along the Uiamho Bicycle Road to reach the Uiam Skywalk. The scenery is beautiful, making it an excellent walking course. ◎ Travel information to experience the charm of Hallyu: This is the site where NCT members completed their first mission in their own content .
