실레마을에서 태어난 김유정은 줄곧 서울에서 자라고 생활하다 1931년에 23살의 나이로 귀향한다. 금병의숙이라는 일종의 야학을 설립하여 농촌계몽운동을 벌이던 그가 처녀작인 산골 나그네를 발표 한 것은 2년 후인 1933년. 실레마을에서 실제로 목격한 일을 소재로 활용한 처녀작 이후로도 김유정 소설의 대부분이 실레마을에서 구상되었고 작품의 등장인물도 상당수가 이곳에 실존했던 인물들이었다.

봉화산 근처 아홉구비를 돌아 떨어지는 50m의 웅장한 물줄기가 장관인 구곡폭포는 1981년 2월 13일 춘천시 관광지로 지정되었으며 면적은 2,423㎢이다. 구곡폭포 매표소에서 걸어서 약 20여분 거리에 폭포가 나타나는데 그 높이와 웅장함이 주변 자연경관과 잘 어우러져 있고 기괴한 암석으로 이루어진 하늘벽 바위 등은 탄성을 자아내게 한다.
