Located along the Hanyeoul Trail at Songdaeso within the Hantan River basin, designated a UNESCO Global Geopark, the Milky Way Bridge was planned to allow domestic and international visitors to naturally explore the area. The Milky Way Bridge is named after the Milky Way, meaning a path made of stars, adding Cheorwon’s name to the scenic Hantan River. It connects Jangheung-ri in the 1st course of Hantan River Columnar Jointing Trail in Dongsong-eup and Sangsari in the 2nd course in Galmal-eup. The suspension bridge, 180m long, 3m wide, and 50m high, is of the 'single-tower asymmetrical suspension' type.

The area of Hantangang River is a UNESCO Global Geopark. The Milky Way Bridge was built to follow a natural path and allows visitors to journey comfortably. The name of the bridge takes from the famous Hantangang River and region of Cheorwon and adds eunhasu, or Milky Way, the path made of stars.

Columnar jointing is a phenomenon formed as hot lava cools and contracts, resulting in vertical cracks, typically forming 5- to 6-sided columns. Songdaeso columnar joints are located where the Hantangang River sharply bends, causing active water erosion on both sides of the river. As a result, vertical basalt cliffs and various columnar joints are exposed, including not only pillar-shaped columns but also fan-shaped and dandelion-shaped formations. The 30-meter-high vertical red cliff harmonizes with the jade-colored Hantangang River water, which appears even deeper than the cliff's height, creating a magnificent view.
