Daegyocheon is located along the western outskirts of the Cheorwon Plain and crosses the plain east to west in the southern part, meeting the main stream of the Hantan River near Goseokjeong. This Daegyocheon is characterized by basalt on both sides of the cliffs, with about 1.5km of basalt cliffs approximately 25m thick exposed. Due to these features, Daegyocheon Basalt Gorge is one of the representative basalt gorge areas of the Hantan River, recognized for its rarity and academic value, and was designated a natural monument in 2004. Located in Goseokjeong National Tourism Site, Cheorwon Facilities Management Office is the main tourism center hosting the Cheorwon tour. Starting from Security Tourist Site Development Plan by Cheorwon-gun county in 1976 , the Ministry of Transportation designated Goseokjeong as Goseokjeong National Tourist Area in 1977. The military and Cheorwon-gun county carried out security and battlefield excavation and preservation projects, and established a security educational site featuring the national largest scale in 1985.
Presently, the Iron Triangle Battlefield, located in Goseokjeong National Tourist Area, is used as a security educational site. Unification Hall found within houses various exhibitions, giving information to compare with current and past lifestyles and military devices including varied aircrafts displayed in the outdoor exhibition area. In the educational hall, a promotional video for Cheorwon is screened. Likewise, the exhibition hall covers various materials that allow one to think about unification between North Korea and South Korea.
Goseok (孤石) is a granite rock about 15 meters high observed within the Hantangang River gorge in Jangheung-ri, Dongsong-eup, Cheorwon-gun. Nearby is a pavilion called Goseokjeong (孤石停), and the surrounding gorge area is collectively referred to by the same name. This area is an important geological and geomorphological study site demonstrating the terrain before the formation of the basalt lava plateau, as well as the basaltic lava that flowed over the bedrock to form the lava plateau. Goseok is the bedrock existing before the Cheorwon land was covered by lava, granite formed underground about 110 million years ago (mid-Cretaceous). After long exposure on the surface, it was covered by basalt lava flows during volcanic activity from approximately 540,000 to 120,000 years ago, then re-exposed due to erosion by the Hantangang River creating a new watercourse. Goseokjeong Pavilion is the most scenic spot among the eight scenic views of Cheorwon. The crystal clear waters of the Hantangang River wind around Goseokbawi Rock, a peculiarly shaped rock about 10 meters tall that stands dominantly in the middle of the river. Goseokjeong Pavilion is a two-story tower-style pavilion that has an area of about 33 square meters, built halfway up the Hantangang River during the reign of King Jinpyeong (r. AD 579-632) of the Silla Kingdom. Today, Goseokjeong refers to the entire area around Goseokjeong Pavilion and the valley surrounding Goseok Rock. Designated as a Monument of Gangwon-do, the pavilion is known to have been one of the most favored places by King Jinpyeong of the Silla Kingdom, and King Chungsuk of the Goryeo dynasty. The area became all the more famous as the arena of Im Kkeok-jeong (?-1562), who was a legendary leader of a peasant rebellion in the early Joseon dynasty.
The pavilion was destroyed during the Korean War and restored in 1971 by community leaders in Cheorwon. Unfortunately, it was damaged once again by flood in 1996 and reconstructed the year after. There is a natural stone chamber inside Goseokbawi Rock that Im Kkeok-jeong used as a hiding place. On the opposite side, there are remains of a stone castle. Jiktang Waterfall is located about 2 kilometers up from this site, while Sundam Valley is situated about 2 kilometers in downstream. Goseokjeong is a year-round tourist attraction with an extensive grass square and recreational facilities. It is also the starting point for DMZ tours as the Iron Triangle Battlefield Conservation Office is located here and in winter, visitors can enjoy migratory bird tours.
Goseokjeong is one of the nine scenic spots of Cheorwon and the most famous attraction in the area. Towering about 10 meters high in the middle of the Hantan River, a crystal-clear stream flows swirling between the two imposing rock formations. It is said that during the reign of King Jinpyeong of Silla, a two-story pavilion about 10 pyeong in size was built on the middle course of the Hantan River and named Goseokjeong. The pavilion and the valley around Goseok Rock together are called Goseokjeong. Designated as a local monument, it is said that King Jinpyeong of Silla and King Chungsuk of Goryeo visited and enjoyed this place. Goseokjeong became more famous as it was known as the base of Im Geokjeong during the Joseon Dynasty in the era of King Myeongjong. Cheorwon, formed by basalt lava flows in the Quaternary of the Cenozoic era, has the Hantan River flowing from north-northeast to south-southwest, creating columnar joints and vertical cliffs of granite through erosion. Located at the center of the Chugaryeong structural belt and later the passage of the Gyeongwon Line, Cheorwon was a suitable place for Im Geokjeong to hide, as he built a high stone wall opposite Goseokjeong as a mountain fortress base. He resisted the corrupt social class by intercepting tributes passing through this area to the royal court from Hamgyeong-do and aiding the poor. The pavilion was destroyed during the Korean War but was rebuilt in 1971 with local support as a 10-pyeong two-story structure; it was washed away by floods in 1996 and reconstructed again in 1997. Currently, a natural stone chamber where Im Geokjeong hid can be found in the massive 20-meter-high rock in the middle of the river, and a stone fortress remains on the opposite side. This scenic spot remains a national tourist site of Cheorwon’s nine views, attracting visitors year-round. About 2 km upstream are Jiktang Waterfall and about 2 km downstream is Sundam, with wide lawns and multipurpose sports grounds available, making it a favored destination throughout the seasons.
