Hwaamsa Temple is a temple located in Sinpyeong-ri, Goseong-gun, Gangwon-do, founded in the 5th year of King Hyegong of Silla, the 36th ruler, in 769 by Monk Jinpyo. It has experienced multiple destructive fires and reconstructions. It was destroyed in the 1st year of King Injo of Joseon (1623) but was rebuilt in the 3rd year (1625). In the 1st year of King Gojong (1864), it was relocated to below Subawi Rock and renamed 'Suamsa (穗岩寺).' The name changed back to 'Hwaamsa (禾岩寺)' in 1912. The temple suffered fire damage again during the Korean War, after which only the main hall was restored. In preparation for the 1991 World Jamboree, the existing buildings were demolished and completely rebuilt to the present state. Currently, Hwaamsa has structures including Iljumun Gate, Daeungjeon Hall, Samseonggak Shrine, Myeongbujeon Hall, and temple lodgings. There are also groups of stupas (budo) and some stone steps believed to date from the late Joseon period. A six-panel folding screen depicting Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, bestowed by King Jeongjo, was once housed here, but its whereabouts after liberation are unknown. Records say there were 15 stupas including the Jugamdang stupa, and 16 portraits including those of Jinpyo-dang. The temple sits in the pure Hwaam Valley on the slopes of Sinseonbong Peak, surrounded by picturesque views of Subawi Rock and Ulsan Rock. Nearby are Sinseonbong, the World Jamboree site, and condominiums, offering many attractions to explore. There is also a traditional tea house within the temple where enjoying traditional tea in the tranquil temple setting can be a special experience. ◎ Travel information to experience the charm of Hallyu – Variety show 'Summer Vacation' Hwaamsa Temple was featured as the place where actors Jung Yu-mi and Choi Woo-shik experienced a templestay in the tvN variety program 'Summer Vacation.' They spent a healing time finding peace of mind through various temple experiences such as Buddhist services and tea conversations with monks. This quiet place blending with nature is recommended as a unique travel destination to rest body and mind.
