Introduction

[Chungnam Provincial Park with Seven Auspicious Sites] Chilgapsan is a mountain said to conceal seven auspicious sites along its long ridges. Despite its modest height of less than 600 meters and its gentle terrain, it holds remarkable potential. The mountain's main ridge extends in five directions, and the ninety-nine tributaries of the Jicheon stream originating from the Cheongyang basin are notable. Cheongyang itself remained untouched by gunfire during the Japanese invasions and the Korean War, and its proximity to Magoksa Temple, known for its historic significance, supports this. Upon reaching Janggoksa Temple, which houses two national treasures and three cultural assets, this belief is nearly certain. While six of the seven sites may be uncertain, at least one is definite. The temple holds National Treasure No. 58, the Iron Medicine Buddha Seated Statue (including the stone pedestal), Treasure No. 174, the Iron Vairocana Buddha Seated Statue, the Sangdaeungjeon Hall (Treasure No. 162) housing these statues, the Gilt-bronze Medicine Buddha Seated Statue (Treasure No. 337) and its hall, the Hadaeungjeon (Treasure No. 181), as well as the Maitreya Buddha Hanging Scroll painted on hemp cloth (National Treasure No. 300). Although the mountain lacks striking peak or valley beauty, its views are noteworthy. It offers a level of scenery comparable to prominent mountains such as Oseosan (790.7m), the highest peak in Chungnam north of the Geum River, Seongjusan (680.4m) to the southwest, and Gwangdeoksan (699m) to the northeast. To the south, the gently flowing Geum River and Buyeo are visible and appear close at hand.

Visitor guide

Getting there

The starting point is Cheongyang. There are eight bus services to Janggoksa Temple. From Dong Seoul Terminal, seven buses go to Cheongyang, and from Nambu Terminal, eight buses are available. There are also bus routes from Incheon, Anyang, and Gunsan outside Chungcheongnam-do. If entering via Hanchigogae Pass, take one of the 40 buses from Daejeon to Cheongyang and get off at the pass. From the Seohaean Expressway, take Daecheon IC → Route 36 towards Cheongyang (for Janggoksa Temple, transfer to local road 645 at Daechi-myeon). From the Nonsan-Cheonan Expressway, take Gongju IC → Route 36 towards Cheongyang.
