Chilgapsan is a famous mountain with an elevation of 561 meters, featuring various peaks and valleys, and its forest remains lush and natural. The name Chilgapsan is said to derive from the worship of mountains and rivers, symbolizing the universe with 'chil' (seven) and 'gapja,' the first character of the sexagenary cycle. Additionally, the name is linked to seven auspicious sites formed by the twisting streams of Jicheon and Ingwa Dalcheon. Designated as a provincial park on March 6, 1973, Chilgapsan covers an area of 32.542 km² across four myeon. Major attractions include the summit, Ahneunghneun Valley (Aheunghneungol), Chilgapsanjang (with statues of Choi Ik-hyeon and the Chilgapsan Song monument), Cheonjangho Lake, Janggoksa Temple, Jeonghyesa Temple, and a natural recreation forest. The mountain has nine hiking trails leading from points such as Janggoksa, Daechi Tunnel, Cheonjangho, Dorimsa site, Kkachine Recreation Area, and the natural recreation forest to the summit. Any trail chosen allows for an immersive natural experience of Chilgapsan. The most popular course starts at Hanti Pass and descends to Janggoksa, taking about three hours. At the trailhead is the famous Cheonjangho suspension bridge, a local landmark of Cheongyang.

Chilgapsan Natural Recreation Forest was established in 1990 to preserve the beautiful scenery of 73 hectares of dense natural forest and was completed on September 12, 1993. It includes 13 forest houses (accommodating about 84 people), 24 two-story forest culture recreation buildings (accommodating about 108 people), 4 thatched huts, a camping site with 20 decks (accommodating about 80 people), one lecture hall (accommodating 150 people), one shelter, 35 benches, a grass plaza, walking trails, fitness facilities, two water play areas, and two parking lots (100 cars). It is a recreational space suitable for families, featuring a nature learning center for children and a grass park for various events, making it ideal for family or group gatherings. Additionally, when the nearby Chilgapho reservoir is filled with water, the combination of water and mountain creates a scenic and highly regarded natural recreation forest.
