Gyeongsangbuk-do Cheongsong County · Today’s itinerary

Following Autumn Leaves on Cliffs and Deep Valleys

Juwangsan is a mountain deep in a remote area, yet it is often talked about. Deep within this mountain, there is a place that evokes the 'legend of autumn.' It is called Jeolgol Valley, named because there used to be a temple in the valley. This course excludes artificial trekking routes, allowing you to fully enjoy the autumn nature of a truly remote area where legend feels like reality.

Jusanchi is a reservoir that began construction in August 1720, the first year of King Gyeongjong of the Joseon Dynasty, and was completed in October the following year. On the rock at the entrance of Jusanchi, there is a memorial stele honoring Lee Jinpyo, a descendant of Wolsung Lee from the 47th year of King Yeongjo (1771), and Jose Man, who made great contributions to the Jusanchi embankment. Since its completion, the reservoir has never dried up or exposed its bottom, even during long droughts. This is due to the geological characteristics of the land holding the water. Jusanchi was created on a rock called welded tuff, which is formed by volcanic ash cemented together; this rock contains dense minerals that make water passage difficult. Particularly, about 30 old willow trees and large willows grow naturally in the lake, creating a beautiful landscape harmonized with the lake. The large willows appear to float on the water, evoking a tranquil and cozy atmosphere as if arriving in a magical world, making it a perfect place to forget the mundane world and relax for a while. Combining rock, water, and trees, Jusanchi offers different scenery each season and was designated a nationally recognized cultural asset as a scenic site in 2013, reflecting its high natural heritage value.

Jeolgol Gorge is a narrow and deep valley that developed over about 5km from the Jeolgol branch office of Juwangsan National Park to Daemun Bridge. It is called Jeolgol because there used to be a temple called Unsuam[雲水庵]there. Jeolgol Gorge is composed of tuff, volcanic ash hardened by cooling after a volcanic eruption. During the cooling and hardening process, contraction occurs and cracks develop in the rock, known as joints. Like Yongchu Gorge, Jeolgol Gorge also has well-developed vertical joints, along which erosion formed the valley. Water flowing through this valley carved the rock floor, creating the current narrow and deep gorge. Thanks to its beautiful scenery, it is nicknamed "the path where you walk with clouds and water as companions."

※ Due to a wildfire in March 2025, the Dalgiyaksutang spring was completely destroyed, so please take note before visiting. Dalgiyaksutang was discovered about 130 years ago during waterway construction. It contains sparkling carbonic acid and various dissolved substances, traditionally known to be effective in treating stomach diseases, gynecological diseases, and eye diseases. The old place name was Dalgidong in Bunae-myeon, Cheongsong-gun, which is why it is called Dalgiyaksu. The spring water comes out of 5 to 6 spots including Sangtang, Jungtang, and Wontang. Around 30 restaurants are operating in the nearby area. Because the spring water is considered mysterious, every year at the end of the third lunar month, the 'Dalgiyaksuryongcheonje' ceremony is held to give thanks at the spring.

Juwangsan National Park 4

Juwangsan (720.6m) is located on a branch of the Taebaek mountain range, which forms the backbone of the Baekdudaegan mountain system in the Korean Peninsula. It is one of Korea's three major rocky mountains, known for its numerous rocky peaks and deep, picturesque valleys. Designated as a tourist attraction on May 30, 1972, it became the 12th national park on March 30, 1976. The park covers a total area of 105.582 km², spanning five myeon in two counties, Cheongsong-gun and Yeongdeok-gun. To the north lie Seoraksan and Odaesan National Parks, and to the south Gyeongju, while to the west are the national parks of Songnisan and Deogyusan. Peaks include Taehangsan, Dusuram, and Gamebong, and valleys such as Jubang, Jeolgol, and Wolae are scattered throughout. With hundred-meter-high rocks standing like a folding screen, it was called Seokbyeongsan in the Silla period and renamed Juwangsan from the late Unified Silla period. Besides four waterfalls, Juwangsan has caves, Daejeonsa Temple, and its associated hermitages, making it a place rich in natural tourist resources.

Attraction ·

Daejeonsa Temple 〉

Buddhism · Gyeongsangbuk-do Cheongsong-gun
Daejeonsa Temple 1
Daejeonsa Temple 2

Cheongsong Daejeonsa Temple was founded by Monk Uisang in the 12th year of King Munmu of Silla (672). Its name originates from Daejeondo Gun, the son of King Juwang in the legend of Juwang. Originally, it was a very large temple but much of it was lost in several fires. Currently, Daejeonsa consists of Bogwangjeon Hall as the main hall, along with Gwaneumjeon, Myeongbujeon, Eungjinjeon, Sanryeonggak, and temple lodgings. The foundation stones scattered across the grounds suggest the temple's former scale. Its subsidiary hermitages are Baekryeonam and Juwangam. In 1672, during the 13th year of King Hyeonjong of Joseon and following destruction in the Imjin War, Bogwangjeon was rebuilt. Since 1995, Myeongbujeon, Sanryeonggak, and Tamjindang have been relocated or newly constructed to the present configuration. (Source: Cheongsong Travel)
