Healing Trip to Cheongsong with Juwangsan and Dalgi Mineral Spring

Cheongsong is a region that holds Juwangsan National Park, famous for its beautiful rocky cliffs. Along Juwang Valley, which preserves the legend of Juwang, visitors can enjoy trekking to waterfalls 1, 2, and 3, as well as to Naewon Village, once known as the 'village without electricity,' now only traces remain. Dalgiyaksutang, counted among Korea's top three medicinal springs, is especially effective for stomach ailments and offers a sensory-pleasing trip where you can enjoy various foods made using the medicinal water.

Songsogotaek in Deokcheon Village, Cheongsong, was a mansion of a wealthy landowner with 99 rooms during the Joseon Dynasty. In 1880, Songso Sim Hotak, the 7th descendant of Sim Cheodae who enjoyed great wealth during King Yeongjo's reign, moved from Jigyung-ri (Hobakgol), Pacheon-myeon, back to their ancestral home in Deokcheon-ri and built this house to reside there, placing a signboard reading “Songso Sejang.” The building features Northern Gyeongbuk folk house style, including a separate courtyard and distinct areas for living, work, and reception, preserving upper-class Joseon Dynasty residential characteristics well. Also notable are the inner and outer walls dividing the outer yard, and a special shrine (byeolmyeo) for ancestral rites spanning up to four generations under the extended family system, representing high ethnological value. A traditional house experience program offers a stay in this tranquil hanok with beautiful natural surroundings. Since it is a private residence where the current owner lives, entry or stepping onto the floor is prohibited during general visits. (Please note some parts of the building were damaged by a wildfire in March 2025.)

※ Due to a wildfire in March 2025, the Dalgiyaksutang spring was completely destroyed, so please take note before visiting. Dalgiyaksutang was discovered about 130 years ago during waterway construction. It contains sparkling carbonic acid and various dissolved substances, traditionally known to be effective in treating stomach diseases, gynecological diseases, and eye diseases. The old place name was Dalgidong in Bunae-myeon, Cheongsong-gun, which is why it is called Dalgiyaksu. The spring water comes out of 5 to 6 spots including Sangtang, Jungtang, and Wontang. Around 30 restaurants are operating in the nearby area. Because the spring water is considered mysterious, every year at the end of the third lunar month, the 'Dalgiyaksuryongcheonje' ceremony is held to give thanks at the spring.

Juwangsan (720.6m) is located on a branch of the Taebaek mountain range, which forms the backbone of the Baekdudaegan mountain system in the Korean Peninsula. It is one of Korea's three major rocky mountains, known for its numerous rocky peaks and deep, picturesque valleys. Designated as a tourist attraction on May 30, 1972, it became the 12th national park on March 30, 1976. The park covers a total area of 105.582 km², spanning five myeon in two counties, Cheongsong-gun and Yeongdeok-gun. To the north lie Seoraksan and Odaesan National Parks, and to the south Gyeongju, while to the west are the national parks of Songnisan and Deogyusan. Peaks include Taehangsan, Dusuram, and Gamebong, and valleys such as Jubang, Jeolgol, and Wolae are scattered throughout. With hundred-meter-high rocks standing like a folding screen, it was called Seokbyeongsan in the Silla period and renamed Juwangsan from the late Unified Silla period. Besides four waterfalls, Juwangsan has caves, Daejeonsa Temple, and its associated hermitages, making it a place rich in natural tourist resources.
