Cheongju Garosu-gil, selected as one of Korea's 100 beautiful roads, is considered the most beautiful road nationwide. Yeonhwasa Temple is a Korean Buddhist Taego Order temple located at Bumoosan in Biha-dong, Heungdeok-gu, Cheongju-si, Chungcheongbuk-do. Bumoosan, historically a strategic point guarding the border between Baekje and Silla, is where Yeonhwasa Temple is situated near the summit of the mountain. From the tree-lined road, a symbol and pride of Cheongju, driving toward the Jungbu Expressway and turning toward Bumoosan, one will find a curved mountain path leading to a quaint mountain temple. Bumoosan is a low mountain of only 232 meters above sea level, with Uamsan Mountain to the distance, and Palbong Mountain standing to the south like a sibling, making it the main mountain of Cheongju and as cozy as its name suggests. To the north, the Miho River curves around, and the historically valuable Bumoosan Fortress surrounds the ridge. Yeonhwasa is connected to a thousand-year-old temple formerly called Yeonwolsah that once existed there; this historic site allows one to encounter old stories and actual moss-covered ceramic fragments. The name Yeonhwasa was given by Monk Cheongam after dreaming of lotus flowers blooming abundantly in the courtyard during a nap and finding the lotus bright. The second head monk Boan resided here from 1955, establishing the current temple grounds. In 1965, the deteriorating main hall (Daeungjeon) and monks' quarters were rebuilt, and with donations from ethnic Korean believers in Japan, a stone Maitreya Buddha was enshrined outdoors. In 1988, an eight-sided, seven-story Diamond Pagoda (Geumgangbotap) was constructed. Within the temple grounds are the ruins of Bumoosan Fortress and a monument recording the modern history of the temple. The Daeungjeon rebuilt in 1965 is a 18-pyeong building with five bays wide and three bays deep, topped with a paljak-style roof; after over 40 years of deterioration, it was completely rebuilt over more than a year from summer 2004.
