Introduction

Mun Hyo-yeong Shrine, located in Urok-ri, Cheongju-si, is a shrine of the Jinju Ha family enshrining the portraits of Munhyo-gong Yeonguijeong Gyeongjae Ha Yeon and his wife Seongsan Lee from 1708 (Sukjong 34). It is also called Tajindang. Ha Yeon was a scholar of early Joseon who studied under Jeong Mong-ju. He passed the state examination at 21 and served in various official posts reaching Yeonguijeong. The portraits enshrined here are copies made in 1749 (Yeongjo 25), originally painted in 1467 (Sejong 13) by Ha Umyung for Ha Yeon and a portrait of Seongsan Lee copied in 1641 (Injo 19) from a Tajindang portrait in Hapcheon, Gyeongsang-do. Ha Yeon is depicted in official robes and his wife in ceremonial dress, uniquely enshrined side by side. Ancestral rites are held on the 15th day of the 2nd and 8th lunar months annually. The current shrine was rebuilt in 1943 and restored in 1978; it is a wooden gabled-roof house with a front of two kan and side of one and a half kan with double eaves. The interior features a single-room floor with two double doors and a front porch. In 1989, a grand gate was built and a fence erected.
