운문산은 높이 1,188m로 경상남도와 경상북도의 경계를 이루고 있으며 영남의 알프스라 불리는 7개의 산 중 하나일 정도로 빼어난 경관을 자랑한다. 수림이 울창한 북쪽 천문지골이 심산계곡으로 알려진 운문산은 낙엽송과 소나무 등의 침엽수림과 고로쇠, 엄나무 등의 활엽수들이 많아 울창한 숲이 주는 수려함을 느낄 수 있다. 이곳에서는 운문산 깃대종인 운문산반딧불이, 꼬리말발돌이 등 희귀 멸종 위기 야생식물 21 분류군과 특산식물 29 분류군, 식물 구계학적 특정 식물종 노랑무늬붓꽃과 천마 등 70 분류군을 만날 수도 있다. 또한, 곳곳에 자리한 기암괴석과 암봉, 깨끗한 물이 흐르는 계곡 등이 만들어내는 절경도 관광객들에게 명소로 손꼽힌다.
