Introduction

[A mountain of Unmunsa Temple with excellent views of the Yeongnam Alps] The mountain forms the western end of the upper ridge of the Yeongnam Alps, shaped like a downward '下' character reflected in a mirror. Although it has a simple, massive mound-like shape, thanks to the long ridges extending north from the subsidiary peaks of Eoksan and Gajisan, it encloses a deep valley where Unmunsa Temple is located. However, to the south, it is a solitary mountain, known as Hanbau Mountain, a large rocky mass. The mountain itself is not particularly impressive in appearance, but the summit offers an excellent view. Behind Gajisan's subsidiary peak Baegunsan, one can see the ridges of Neungdong to Jaeyaksan, and beyond them, the majestic silhouette of Ganwolsan. In autumn, silver grass waves along the ridge. As the mountain's name originates from Unmunsa Temple, it seems to exist for the temple, which holds many treasures. The same applies to Gajisan; locals claim that what is now called Gajisan was originally Unmunsan. From Janggunpyeong, where Unmunsa is located, Gajisan is visible, so this claim is not without basis. The name Gajisan (迦智山), meaning 'Wisdom of Shakyamuni,' was also changed by the late Silla monk Doi when he introduced the new Zen Buddhist teachings.
