Cheongdo Eupseong is a stone fortress built in the central area of Cheongdo-gun, on a terraced land in Hwayang-eup, with a higher south side and lower north side. It is a castle built to protect the townspeople of the region, presumed to have been constructed since the Goryeo period. The fortress is about 2 km in circumference and 1.7 m in height. It is a low-mountain fortress, an intermediate type between mountain and flatland fortresses, with a square layout. The fortress walls are built with natural stones using the hyeopchuk (mixed stone) technique. During the Imjin War, the east, west, and north gates were destroyed and the walls damaged. Furthermore, during the Japanese colonial period's fortress demolition policy, the walls were further dismantled and the gatehouses removed. Currently, only parts of the walls and foundations remain, making it impossible to know the construction details beneath the fortress site. Every March, Cheongdo-gun holds the [Cheongdo Eupseong Balgi] event. Cheongdo Eupseong Balgi is a custom where women walk along the ridge of the fortress walls in groups, believed to ward off evil spirits, promote health and longevity, and grant rebirth in paradise. It is said that walking once around Cheongdo Eupseong brings health, twice longevity, and three times wish fulfillment.
Cheongdo Hyanggyo is an educational institution established in the early Joseon period, also known as Hwayang Hyanggyo. Hyanggyo were national educational institutions of the Goryeo and Joseon dynasties established to enshrine the tablets of great Confucian scholars, hold rituals, and provide education and moral instruction to local people. In 1568, County Governor Lee Seongyeong built it in Gopyeong-dong, and it was moved to Hapcheon-dong in 1626, then relocated again to Gyocheon-ri, Hwayang-eup in 1734. County Governors Song Gye-baek in 1843 and Choi Byeong-cheol in 1929 repaired the Daeseongjeon, and in 1978 County Governor Choi Hyeong-su refurbished the Myeongnyundang. The site has eight buildings, including Daeseongjeon, Dongmu, Seomu, Naesammun, Myeongnyundang, Dongjae, Seojae, and Sarakru. Generally, the Daeseongjeon, used for rituals, and the Myeongnyundang, used for education, are arranged front and back, but here the two buildings are uniquely placed side by side. The hyanggyo offers an experiential program called the Chung Hyo classroom for youth, teaching calligraphy and classical Chinese. The calligraphy class has held exhibitions showcasing skills and works developed over many years. Additionally, it hosts writing contests and publishes the Cheongdo Hyanggyo journal to promote understanding and continuation of traditional culture.
Unmun Dam, embracing the sky, clouds, and greenery, offers ever-changing scenery that captivates at every bend, leaving no moment to look away. Around the dam lies a wide lake called Unmun Lake, along which a 25.4 km trail circles the dam. It is a great course for driving or walking. When Unmun Dam was constructed, seven administrative districts in Unmun-myeon, Cheongdo-gun, were submerged. Near Unmun Dam is Manghyangjeong, built to preserve the memories and nostalgia of displaced residents, documenting the construction process from groundbreaking to completion and the story of the submerged villages.
