Aunae means 'embracing two streams,' serving as a junction connecting Gyeongsang-do and Hanyang. Located in Byeongcheon-myeon, Dongnam-gu, Cheonan-si, Aunae Market has thrived since the Joseon Dynasty, where merchants from across the country including Cheongju, Jincheon, Jochiwon, and Yesan brought local specialties and cattle, making it the largest among nearby markets. Also called Byeongcheon Market, it operates on the 1st, 6th, 11th, 16th, 21st, and 26th of each month and is famous for 'Byeongcheon Sundae,' a pork dish with cabbage, green onions, chili peppers, and garlic minced with blood sausage, known as a culinary landmark of Cheonan. Normally closed, on market days tents and parasols cover the street fully. The market is filled with various agricultural, marine products, and manufactured goods. A rare puffed rice machine appears, where villagers line up with rice, corn, and garaetteok. When the vendor shouts 'ppung-iyo,' the popping sound accompanies fragrant, sweet, and crispy puffed rice pouring down in white. The main area is a spacious open lot beside Aunae Super, around which traders gather in nearby alleys. In 1919, activist Yu Gwan-sun distributed Taegeukgi flags and shouted cheers here; nearby are the birthplaces of Yu Gwan-sun and Dr. Jo Byeong-ok.
Cheonan Byeongcheon Sundae Street is a famous food destination in Cheonan, home to over 20 well-known Byeongcheon sundae restaurants nationwide. Sundae gukbap (blood sausage soup), a beloved dish that can fill hungry stomachs at affordable prices, is loved by both rural and urban customers. For enthusiasts who think of a warm bowl of sundae gukbap when having a drink on a cold day, Cheonan's Aunae (Byeongcheon) Market is heaven. Currently, the Aunae Market features around 20 sundae specialty restaurants, each proud of their unique taste and portions. Before 1968, sundae gukbap was sold only on market days, but since 1968 it has been served regularly. The market began taking on its present form in the early 1990s when many small and medium-sized enterprises moved nearby, leading to an increase in sundae restaurants. Byeongcheon sundae uses small intestines, resulting in less of the typical pig smell, and vegetable sundae made with carefully added cabbage, Chinese cabbage, and glass noodles is mild and chewy. Sundae guk made with Byeongcheon sundae has a milky broth like ox bone soup but is not heavy, making it suitable even for first-time sundae guk eaters.
