천주산은 경상남도 창원시와 함안군 칠원면에 걸쳐 있는 산으로, '하늘을 받치고 있다'는 뜻의 이름을 가지고 있다. 예로부터 청룡산, 담산, 작대산 등 다양한 이름으로 불렸다. 조선시대의 명재상이었던 허목 선생이 관직을 내려놓고 낙향하여 이곳에 머무르며 지냈던 장소이기도 하다. 천주산의 대표적인 자연 명소 중 하나인 달천 계곡은 울창한 숲과 드넓은 반석, 맑고 깨끗한 계곡물이 어우러져 무더운 여름철 시민들이 피서지로 이용하고 있다. 봄이 되면 천주산은 진달래 군락지로 변신한다. 매년 4월이면 진달래가 만개해 진달래 축제가 열리며, 많은 관광객들이 이를 보기 위해 방문한다. 천주산 정상에 오르면 창원시 전경이 한눈에 들어오는 탁 트인 조망이 펼쳐져 많은 이들이 찾는 이유가 된다.
