Ungcheon Angol Waeseong is a Japanese-style fortress built by Japanese troops and served as a base for the Japanese navy. During the Imjin War, the Japanese forces suffered repeated naval defeats to Korean forces, leading to severe military damage and disrupted supply lines from Japan. Around 1593, to control the Korean navy at sea and establish a long-term base, 18 Japanese castles including Ungcheon Angol Waeseong were constructed at strategic points along the southern coast. It was designated as a Gyeongsangnam-do cultural asset in 1998. The fortress sits atop Dongmangsan Mountain at 100m above sea level, east of Angolpo, measuring 3–8m in height, 594m in circumference, and approximately 16,529㎡ in area. It is located about 4 km from Gadukdo Waeseong. The terrain of Dongmangsan is divided into three parts; the summit was partially cut to form the main fortress, the first outer perimeter, and the second outer perimeter, each separately stone-walled and connected externally. Some outer sections are earthen walls. Although built by Japanese troops, the tears and grievance of our ancestors, who were forced to labor in its construction, must not be overlooked. It also serves as valuable material to compare Korean and Japanese fortress construction techniques.
