Hoewon Seowon was built by Jangmunjae, a disciple of scholar Han-gang Jeong-gu from the mid-Joseon period, to commemorate him. The seowon disappeared due to the Daewongun’s seowon abolition order during King Gojong's reign, with only the pavilion Gwanhaejeong remaining. In front of Gwanhaejeong stands a ginkgo tree over 440 years old, said to have been planted by Jeong-gu himself. Every year in the lunar months of March and September, memorial services are held honoring Jeong-gu and his disciple Heo Mok.
