In the early 1960s, a woman known as the Hokkoburi grandmother, who ran a salted eel restaurant in the central Masan district of Odongdong, created a dish by steaming monkfish caught by fishermen with soybean paste, red chili paste, bean sprouts, water parsley, green onions, and more. This spicy, fiery, chewy, and mild-tasting dish became widely known among Masan Port fishermen. As a result, a street with about 20 agu jjim (steamed monkfish) restaurants naturally formed around Odongdong. Agujjim originated in Masan and is now loved nationwide. The main ingredients, monkfish, water parsley, and bean sprouts, are rich in vitamins A, B1, and C, making it good for skin care and particularly appetizing when one has no appetite. Masan Odongdong Agujjim Street features specialty dried monkfish stew restaurants, offering a unique taste experience.

Masan Fish Market 〉

Permanent Market · Gyeongsangnam-do Changwon-si
Masan Fish Market 1

Masan Fish Market has over 200 sashimi restaurants and aquariums, offering everything from premium fish species to mackerel and pollack, the main ingredients of everyday meals, all freshly caught from the pollution-free clean waters of the South Sea. It is a place where you can enjoy selecting Masan's dried fish and salted seafood at affordable prices. Established as a representative festival of Masan, the Masan Fish Market Festival provides various sights and participatory spaces to taste and feel freshness and vitality. Selected as CNN's Gyeongnam Best 9 tourist destinations, Masan Fish Market upgrades customer satisfaction and happiness with modernized facilities such as arcades, spacious yards, and rest areas, striving to discover trends for customer satisfaction. After the installation of Masan Chang, the magistrate of Changwon assigned officials and guards to the tax office, and villages began to form around the seaboard, shaping the market (Masanjang). It is said that various seafood caught by fishermen, agricultural products, fabrics, and metalware were traded at Masanjang back then. After Masanpo opened as a port in 1899, foreign manufactured goods arrived, revitalizing the market and forming the basis supporting Masan's economy. Records in the 'Mangiyoram' state that Masanpo had as many as 130 inns (similar in function to the current Fisheries Cooperative), suggesting the old Masan fish market flourished greatly. Centered around the tax office, the fish market expanded along the Masan Port reclamation to its current location between Dongseo-dong Happo-ro and the coastal road near the Fisheries Cooperative. Masan Port was reclaimed several times between 1927 and 1940, starting from about 11,000 pyeong near the current Namseong-dong post office and Kookdong Wedding Hall, eventually expanding to 67,000 pyeong between Hongkong Bar (behind Daewoo Department Store) and the Fisheries Cooperative, reaching its current state. ◎ Travel information to experience the charm of the Korean Wave - The market where Seo-rae and Hae-jun from the movie reunite with their spouses is a fish market selling about 250 species of seasonal fish and various seafood, full of lively energy. Walking through the market, one envisions the two communicating silently with just their eyes.
